Is Sam Darnold's performance enough to bench J.J. McCarthy, a generational talent?Poonch Day was a fitting tribute to the unbreakable bond between the people of Poonch and Indian Army. Approximately 5,000 veterans participated in a grand event in Poonch on Friday to mark the 77th anniversary of the historic military link-up of Poonch, a border district in Jammu and Kashmir, with the rest of the country, according to a release. The Poonch Link-Up Day is a significant event in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, commemorating the Indian Army's successful conclusion of a grueling 15-month siege of Poonch on this day in 1948 under the leadership of the revered Brigadier Pritam Singh. Despite enduring hunger, disease, and relentless assaults by the Pakistani Army, the unwavering spirit of the people of Poonch and the Indian Army triumphed. On this occasion, Lieutenant General Navin Sachdeva, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding, 16 Corps, reflected on the shared legacy, stating, "Today, we come together to honour the courage, resilience, and unbreakable bond that the Awam and Indian Army have shared over the past 77 years." The celebrations witnessed enthusiastic participation in sports such as football, cricket, hockey, and volleyball, with villages competing passionately and showcasing exceptional talent. City FC, Shahpur Cricket Club, Shyam Lal Hockey Club, and Shaheed Manjeet Singh Club emerged victorious. Taekwondo, a relatively uncommon sport in the region, also featured performances worthy of national recognition. A bike rally was flagged off as part of the festivities. A Talent Hunt provided a platform for young performers, including Nazir, a visually impaired poet from Mendhar, who expressed his gratitude, saying, "Performing in front of such a large audience is a dream come true. I am thankful to the Army for giving us this opportunity." The General Officer Commanding of the 25 Infantry Division emphasised the importance of such events in fostering unity, stating, "This is more than a contest; it is a celebration of our shared dreams and strength in unity." Lieutenant General Navin Sachdeva interacted with the winners, applauding their determination and sportsmanship. Alongside sports, cultural events showcased the district's rich heritage, featuring traditional folk songs, dances, and poetry unique to Poonch, highlighting the unity and shared history of the region. The General further remarked, "These veterans served their time in the Army. Now it's our turn to serve them." The rally, held at the historic Pritam Stadium, underscored the Indian Army's enduring commitment to its veterans. A Defence spokesperson noted, "For the people of Poonch and the Indian Army, Poonch Day is more than a commemoration--it is a celebration of a living, breathing relationship. The district has been buzzing with activity for the past month, culminating in a series of vibrant events reflecting the community's festive spirit." Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Saturday, November 30, responded to the alleged bribery and fraud allegations against the conglomerate, saying that the legal matter involving the US Department of Justice is a challenge which the Group has faced "not for the first time". “As most of you would have read, less than two weeks back, we faced a set of allegations from the US about compliance practices at Adani Green Energy. This is not the first time we have faced such challenges. What I can tell you is that every attack makes us stronger and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group,” said Adani said at the 51st Gem and Jewellery Awards in Rajasthan's Jaipur. On November 20, US prosecutors alleged that $250 million in bribes were paid to unnamed Indian officials in exchange for favourable terms on solar power contracts awarded to Adani Green Energy Ltd and Azure Power Global Ltd, another New Delhi-headquartered firm. "In January last year, just as we were getting ready to launch our Follow-on Public Offering. We faced a short-selling attack initiated from abroad. This was not a typical financial strike; it was a double hit-targeting our financial stability and pulling us into a political controversy. All of this was further amplified by certain media with vested interests. But even in the face of such adversity, our commitment to our principles remained strong. After successfully raising ₹ 20,000 crore from India’s largest-ever FPO, we made the extraordinary decision to return the proceeds. We then further demonstrated our resilience by raising capital from several international sources and proactively reducing our Debt to EBITDA ratio to below 2.5 times, an unmatched metric in the global infrastructure space. Moreover, our all-time record financial results in the same year showcased our commitment to operational excellence. Not a single Indian or foreign credit rating agency downgraded us. Finally, the Supreme Court of India’s affirmation of our actions validated our approach."Ben Hunt's exit relegates Dragons below Wests Tigers as Brisbane Broncos get immediate boostTo play Maria Callas, Angelina Jolie had to learn how to breathe again

The Bell Capital Cup entered its halfway point on Sunday and the long-running tournament continues to make history. For the first time in its 24 years, four teams took to the ice to play sledge hockey. The teams include kids aged 3 to 17-years-old with physical or cognitive disabilities. Last year, sledge hockey was introduced with a team from Quebec and Ottawa taking part in a demonstration game. This year, they're joined by teams from Kingston and Hamilton, giving them a full division. "They are playing to win their championship, just like all the other kids that are playing in this same tournament," said Bell Capital Cup general manager Mark Sluban. "We're very inclusive here at the Bell Cup, it's something I thought was very important for us to strive for and we're only going to make that bigger and better for years to come." Tyrone Henry was in attendance to watch the first games played. Henry has spent a decade as a member of the Canadian National Sledge Hockey Team. "Having the kids play on a big rink with a bunch of fans in the stands, I think it gives them a bit of pride in playing the sport and what they're doing." Henry said. Sledge Hockey Eastern Ontario president Mia Van Bommel added, "We're pretty welcoming and we do group people in larger groups so that we have enough athletes to play." "We really want to showcase the talent of our athletes and really introduce the Ottawa community and the greater community to the sport that we love." The semi-finals will be played on Monday with the finals set for New Years Eve at the Bell Sensplex. Shopping Trends The Shopping Trends team is independent of the journalists at CTV News. I don't think that you should treat kids necessarily different,' he told the outlet. 'And then when I had a daughter, I was like, 'I'm not going to spoil her, I'm going to raise her tough. She's going to be hard.' And the moment she came out, I was like, 'Yeah, that's not going to work.'' Jason announced his retirement back in March of this year after 13 NFL seasons - thanking Kylie while emphasizing how important it was for him to be there for his daughters. In the wake of Mortal Kombat 1’s dwindling popularity, a leaker claims WB and NetherRealm have scrapped alleged plans for more story DLC and guest fighters. Mortal Kombat 1 hit the ground running upon its September 2023 release, yet hasn’t been able to keep up the momentum since then. Balance issues and an inconsistent post-launch support cadence have resulted in MK1 facing steep player drop-offs, which may impact overall sales. MK1 topped four million copies sold in 11 months, whereas MK11 moved 12 million units in about two years. The newer title’s current sales pace suggests it won’t reach the same milestone as its predecessor anytime soon. And a new rumor indicates it only has so many marketing beats left to hit, if a leak about canceled DLC is to be believed. Mortal Kombat 1 leak dashes Kombat Pack 3 hopes Trusted MK leaker _FateUnknown_ claims that while NetherRealm previously planned to deliver a second story expansion and Kombat Pack 3, neither will see the light of day. The leaker noted in a Reddit post (via TheThiny ), “Kombat pack 3 and a second story expansion were planned. All canceled recently, no more characters after Kombat Pack 2. A kameo or two might make it since there has been work done on them but I don’t know yet.” When asked why the plug got pulled on future Mortal Kombat 1 DLC , _FateUnknown_ replied, “Khaos Reigns sold poorly.” NetherRealm and WB Games have yet to specify what awaits MK1 once support for Kombat Pack 2 concludes. As such, fans should not take the above cancelation details at face value. If Khaos Reigns failed to meet sales expectations, it’s not Mortal Kombat 1’s only noteworthy shortcoming of late. Evo France has announced its 2025 lineup and MK1 doesn’t appear on the list, despite having a presence at the 2024 event. Related:

A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed the move on Friday. The announcement comes one day after Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said it donated $1 million to the same fund. Amazon also said it plans to donate $1 million. “President Trump will lead our country into the age of AI, and I am eager to support his efforts to ensure America stays ahead," Altman said in a statement. Altman, who is in a legal dispute with rival Elon Musk, has said he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO's influence in the incoming administration. Trump is putting Musk, the world’s richest man, and Vivek Ramaswamy , an entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate, in charge of the new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which is an outside advisory committee that will work with people inside the government to reduce spending and regulations. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging that the maker of ChatGPT betrayed its founding aims of benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk recently escalated the lawsuit by asking a federal judge to stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. —— The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement allowing OpenAI access to part of the AP’s text archives.

NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump wants to turn the lights out on daylight saving time. In a post on his social media site Friday, Trump said his party would try to end the practice when he returns to office. “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation,” he wrote. Setting clocks forward one hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall is intended to maximize daylight during summer months, but has long been subject to scrutiny. Daylight saving time was first adopted as a wartime measure in 1942. Lawmakers have occasionally proposed getting rid of the time change altogether. The most prominent recent attempt, a now-stalled bipartisan bill named the Sunshine Protection Act , had proposed making daylight saving time permanent. The measure was sponsored by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , whom Trump has tapped to helm the State Department. “Changing the clock twice a year is outdated and unnecessary,” Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida said as the Senate voted in favor of the measure. Health experts have said that lawmakers have it backward and that standard time should be made permanent. Some health groups , including the American Medical Association and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, have said that it’s time to do away with time switches and that sticking with standard time aligns better with the sun — and human biology. Most countries do not observe daylight saving time. For those that do, the date that clocks are changed varies, creating a complicated tapestry of changing time differences. Arizona and Hawaii don't change their clocks at all.

Premier David Eby says his party has reached an agreement in principle with the B.C. Greens to ensure "stable governance" for the next four years. The agreement, subject to annual reviews, spells out the basis on which B.C. Greens provide "confidence" to the B.C. NDP and areas where the parties will work together. They include healthcare, where the B.C. NDP will support the growth of Community Health Centres, a key proposal of the B.C. Greens during the election campaign. Other key elements include housing with the government actively supporting efforts by various groups to "protect, purchase and build 30,000 units of non-market housing" over the next four years with 7,500 units as a goal by the end of 2025. Electoral reform also makes a return with the establishment of a special commitment to "review and consider preferred methods of proportional representation" as part of deliberations designed to "increase democratic engagement, address increasing political polarization, and improve the representativeness of government." The agreement does "not lay out the full program" of government "nor does it presume support" for "initiatives and other matters not addressed within this agreement" but gives Eby's government more stability once the legislature returns next year. The agreement echoes without replicating the confidence-and-supply agreement of 2017 that allowed the B.C NDP to return after 16 years in opposition as a minority government with the help of three B.C. Greens. The B.C. NDP currently holds 47 seats, enough for a bare majority, while the B.C. Greens hold two seats. More to come...

Bathinda: The fast unto death by farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal entered the 12th day on Saturday, but there was no communication from the central govt for resumption of talks on their demand for a legal guarantee to MSP , which had been stalled long ago. As per doctors attending to him, Dallewal has lost 8 kilograms since he started the fast and his kidneys have started getting impacted due to less intake of water than required. Despite all this, Dallewal says he is in high spirits and will continue the fast. Protesting farm groups Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have said as they have not received any communication from the govt, the next jatha (group) of 101 farmers will move towards Delhi at noon on Sunday and will counter force with patience. They had stopped their foot march to Delhi on Friday afternoon and handed over a demand charter to Haryana Police officials who had promised to speak to higher authorities. Farm leaders, during talks with police officials, preferred talks with Union ministers, preferably the agriculture minister, and had announced not to send any jatha on Saturday to wait for the govt response. When farmers had given a call for Delhi Chalo on Feb 13 this year, Union ministers reached Chandigarh to hold talks with farmers on Feb 8. The second round of talks was held on Feb 12, third on Feb 15 and fourth on Feb 18. The fourth meeting continued till the wee hours of Feb 19, where Union ministers offered to purchase five crops on MSP for five years on contract basis, but farmers rejected the offer and demanded a legal right to MSP on all 23 crops as per C2+50% profit. The talks were then stalled and now farmers want those talks to be revived after nearly 10 months. “We were called for talks by Haryana Police officials at Shambhu on Friday afternoon and had asked for our demands. We were told efforts will be made for talks, and we had halted the movement of jatha, but we have not heard anything from them,” said KMM coordinator Sarvan Singh Pandher. Farm leaders Tejveer Singh and Guramneet Singh said Ambala administration had stopped farmers from moving ahead on the grounds that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS (earlier Section 144 of CrPC) were in force, but at the same time there was a show by a Sufi singer where hundreds of persons, including families of officials, had assembled in Ambala. “It proves that Haryana is bent upon snatching the fundamental rights of farmers,” they said. Farm leaders putting up at Khanauri, including Abhimanyu Kohad, said going by the condition of Dallewal, the state and central govts should initiate talks to end the stalemate. “If anything happens to him, both the govts will be responsible,” Kohad said. Trump transition says Cabinet picks, appointees were targeted by bomb threats, swatting attacksNEW YORK (AP) — Smartmatic won't be required to give Fox News a trove of information about U.S. federal charges against the voting machine company's co-founder over alleged bribery in the Philippines, a judge ruled Thursday. Fox News and parent Fox Corp. sought the information to help fight Smartmatic's $2.7 billion defamation suit over broadcasts about the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Smartmatic says its business was gutted when Fox aired false claims that the election-tech company helped rig the voting. Fox says it was simply reporting on newsworthy allegations made by then-President Donald Trump and his allies. At the same hearing, Judge David B. Cohen also turned down Smartmatic's request to question two Fox Corp. board members. The company has already questioned others. The Aug. 8 indictment of Smartmatic co-founder Roger Piñate and two other executives concerns a geographically distant matter: Smartmatic's efforts to get work in the Philippines between 2015 and 2018. But Fox maintains the criminal case is pertinent to Smartmatic's business prospects, and therefore to the election-tech company's claims about what it lost and stands to lose because of Fox's 2020 coverage. “As of Aug 8, governments will have to take into account the risks of doing business with a company (where some executives have been) accused of serious corruption by the U.S. Department of Justice," Fox lawyer Brad Masters told a New York court Thursday. He asked the court to order Smartmatic to provide any documents that it has given to the DOJ for the bribery investigation; any customer inquiries about the criminal charges; and any staff communications about the matter and its impact on the company. The indictment accuses Piñate and two other Smartmatic executives of scheming to pay over $1 million in bribes to a Filipino election official to deploy the company's machines and pay promptly for them. Federal prosecutors say the payments were made through sham loan agreements and via a slush fund created by overcharging for the machines. Piñate, who has served as Smartmatic’s president, and at least one of the other executives have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to violate the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and to money laundering. It’s unclear from court records whether the third executive has entered a plea or has an attorney who can comment on the charges. Boca Raton, Florida-based Smartmatic itself isn’t charged in the criminal case. The company put the executives on leave and sought to reassure voters that elections are “conducted with the utmost integrity and transparency.” Smartmatic's lawyers contend the indictment is irrelevant to the defamation suit, which is about election-fraud claims that Trump's attorneys made on Fox News programs. The indictment is “merely an allegation,” Smartmatic attorney Caitlin Kovacs argued Thursday. She suggested Fox wanted to “play prosecutor to the jury” and “accuse Smartmatic of a crime that they didn’t commit.” Cohen denied two similar requests from Fox while the federal investigation was ongoing. He said Thursday that the indictment didn't change his mind. “It’s a mere accusation. It raises no presumption of guilt,” he said. Smartmatic is suing over shows in which Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell portrayed the company as part of a broad conspiracy to steal the 2020 vote from Trump, a Republican and the winner of this year's election. Federal and state election officials , exhaustive reviews in battleground states and Trump’s own then-attorney general found no widespread fraud that could have changed the outcome of the 2020 election. Nor did they uncover any credible evidence that the vote was tainted. Dozens of judges, including some whom Trump appointed, rejected his fraud claims. Fox News ultimately aired an interview with an election technology expert who refuted the allegations against Smartmatic. As is normal in the run-up to a civil trial, various players connected to both parties have been questioned under oath by the other side's lawyers. These out-of-court sessions are called depositions. Smartmatic wanted Thursday to get depositions ordered for Fox Corp. board members Chase Carey and Roland Hernandez. The two attended meetings where critical decisions were made, Smartmatic argues. Fox lawyer Devin Anderson said there's no indication that Carey and Hernandez “have any relevant information” to add. Smartmatic already has questioned other board members, including Executive Chair and CEO Lachlan Murdoch and former House Speaker Paul Ryan, as well as Fox founder Rupert Murdoch, the attorney said. Depositions generally aren't made public at this stage of a case. Smartmatic lawyer Erik Connolly said after court that the company was pursuing other information to show “that Fox Corp. controlled the disinformation spread by Fox News.” A message seeking comment was sent to Fox. The news network is countersuing Smartmatic , claiming the defamation case violates a New York law against baseless suits aimed at squelching reporting or criticism on public issues. Smartmatic recently settled defamation suits against One America News Network and Newsmax . Fox News settled for $787 million last year with another voting-technology company, Dominion Voting Systems.

Germany has intensified efforts to bolster its civil defense, with metro stations being considered as air raid shelters amid rising tensions with Russia. Public buildings were designated for bunker conversion by the Federal Office for Civil Protection. According to the Bild newspaper, authorities intend to release an app that directs locals to these shelters. Fears sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to the proposal. Security worries have been heightened by Moscow's hybrid war strategies and threats against countries supporting Kyiv, according to German authorities. Scaling Back Reversed After War Escalations In the past, Germany reduced the number of public bunkers. Such safeguards were judged unneeded by officials in 2007. Recent changes in geopolitics, however, forced a reevaluation. There are just 579 public shelters left, according to the Federal Office for Civil Protection. In a nation with 84.4 million inhabitants, these could only hold 500,000. Rebuilding a bunker network may take a decade, said office chief Ralph Tiesler. As a result, the emphasis is now on speedier fixes. Additionally, home shelters are being promoted, particularly in basements. Poland and UK Shelter Capacities Highlighted The lack of shelter in Germany stands in sharp contrast to Poland's surrounding efforts. According to a report referenced by Notes From Poland, Poland's official bomb shelters could accommodate 300,000 people. Since then, authorities there have found interim solutions, like as tunnels and metro stations, that are adequate to safeguard the whole populace. Subterranea Britannica, a research society, identified 276 nuclear-protection bunkers throughout the United Kingdom. These figures highlight the differences in readiness throughout Europe. Civil Defense Becomes a Priority Across Europe As Vladimir Putin's administration continues to threaten, civil defense measures are being reinstated. Additionally, German authorities are reacting to the public's mounting anxiety over possible assaults. A pressing need to adjust to changing risks is reflected in proactive planning, which includes the creation of technology and public awareness initiatives. Even if the policy might not be completely implemented for decades, Germany is now concentrating on short-term adjustments. Mumbai: Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan, who was last seen in ‘Jawan’, returned to Mumbai from Alibaug along with his family on Sunday. The actor went incognito as he hid his face inside a giant hoodie while holding his pet dog. His wife Gauri Khan and kids were also seen with him at the Gateway Of India. Last month, the superstar celebrated his 59th birthday on November 2. The actor, who entered the film industry after a brief stint in television, capitalised on the opening of India’s economy, and made a seamless shift from grey characters to the king of romance. SRK is inarguably the face of Indian cinema across the world with several honorary doctorate degrees, a Padma Shri, and the French Legion of Honour. Exclusive Shah Rukh Khan with his pet dog clicked at Alibaug jetty as they leave for Mumbai. pic.twitter.com/LUxJ1itNIT The actor single-handedly pulled the Hindi film industry out of the commercial lull induced due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the actor’s streak of consecutive success, with ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’, experienced a bumpy rise with ‘Dunki’. The combo of one of the most successful and influential filmmakers of modern Hindi cinema, and one of the biggest stars in the world, received a more than lukewarm response at the box-office. The film clashed with the Prabhas-starrer ‘Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire’ around the same time last year. Both the films eventually suffered because of the clash unlike the recent box-office clash of Ajay Devgn-starrer ‘Singham Again’, and the Kartik Aaryan-starrer ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’. Meanwhile, SRK and Gauri Khan’s elder son Aryan Khan is making his directorial debut with a streaming series. The series is set against the backdrop of the Hindi film industry. The multi-genre project promises an unabashed take on cinema through the adventures of a charming, ambitious outsider navigating the lanes of B-town. The series blends a high-stakes narrative with self-aware humour. It also features cameos and larger-than-life characters. This upcoming Bollywood series marks the sixth collaboration between Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment following the hit dark comedy film ‘Darlings’, crime-drama ‘Bhakshak’, the cop-drama film ‘Class of ’83’, the zombie horror series ‘Betaal’, and the spy thriller ‘Bard of Blood’. Produced by Gauri Khan, the series marks Aryan Khan’s debut as a creator and director, and is set to stream on Netflix in 2025.BillionToOne to Present at the 43rd Annual J.P. In the past week, he’s taunted Canadian officials by suggesting the US could absorb its northern neighbor and make it the 51st state. He threatened to take over the Panama Canal, the US-made waterway controlled for a quarter century by its Central American namesake. And on Sunday, he resurfaced his first-term desire to obtain Greenland, a Danish territory he has long eyed. With Trump, the differences between serious policy proposals and rhetorical flourishes intended to stoke media attention or energize his base are not always clear. At other times, his provocations have appeared to be the opening salvos in his attempts at dealmaking. Indeed, when Trump vocalized his threat to take back the Panama Canal this weekend, he did so with an out for the country to avoid his wrath: lower fees on American ships that utilize the passageway to travel between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. “So to the officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly,” he warned on Sunday during remarks to conservative activists in Arizona. Still, the suggestions are strikingly similar in their focus on expanding the United States’ footprint abroad. And for someone who argued during the campaign that the US should pull back from foreign intervention, the ideas carry modern echoes of the 19th century doctrine of Manifest Destiny — a belief in the United States’ divine right to expand across the continent. Trump on Sunday evening called ownership of Greenland an “absolute necessity” for “purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World.” His pitch to seize the Panama Canal – which he described as a “vital national asset” though it’s been decades since America controlled it – reflected a similarly nationalist agenda that Trump often describes as “America First.” Speaking in Arizona this weekend, Trump also reiterated plans to designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, a distinction that could preface the use of military force on Mexican soil. Trump has threatened to drop bombs on fentanyl labs and send special forces to take out cartel leaders, an incursion that could violate Mexico’s sovereignty and disrupt relations with the United States’ largest trading partner. Trump’s transition team declined to clarify whether these latest statements reflect genuine ambitions or other motivations, instead pointing CNN back to his recent comments and social media posts. Several people close to and within Trump’s transition could not pinpoint the origins of his sudden interest in the ongoing activities at the Panama Canal, a topic that he didn’t raise on the campaign trail. One adviser, though, noted that Trump regularly elevates causes brought to his attention by people ranging from longtime friends to new acquaintances if it animates him. Since winning the election last month, Trump has spent most days entertaining close allies, business titans, donors and heads of state at his Palm Beach estate. Another adviser said concerns about treatment of US companies in Panama likely resonated with Trump because “trade is top of mind for him.” Pressuring Panama to lower fees on ships that use the canal could also help offset an expected rise in costs of products resulting from the tariffs Trump intends to impose on foreign goods. “I always take him seriously, even though they may sound a little bit out there,” Florida GOP Rep. Carlos Gimenez said of Trump’s comments on Fox Business on Monday. “It’s a legitimate threat to Panama.” Panama President José Raúl Mulino posted a lengthy statement in Spanish and English on social media declaring ownership of the port “not negotiable.” Built at the turn of the 20th century, the canal was operated by the US until 1999, when it was fully turned over to Panama under a treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter two decades prior that guaranteed American use of the canal in perpetuity. “I want to express precisely that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belong to Panama, and will continue to,” Mulino wrote. The response did little to discourage Trump and his allies, though, who responded with memes and images on social media doubling down on his latest cause. “Welcome to the United States Canal,” Trump posted on Truth Social, along with a picture of a US flag sailing on the waterway. Mulino, speaking to CNN en Espanol contributor Andres Oppenheimer for an interview that will air this Sunday, scoffed at Trump’s criticism that Panama is unable to ensure the canal’s operation. “That is a manifestation of gross ignorance of history. The canal will celebrate 25 years under Panamanian hands, under Panamanian administration, on December 31,” he said, highlighting work, including an expansion project, that Panama has achieved since the US turned it over, which he said, “leaves multimillion-dollar profits for our national economy.” Trump’s pitch to purchase Greenland from Denmark, which he first made in his first term, was similarly rebuffed. The prime minister of the autonomous Danish territory, Mute Egede, said in a Facebook post on Monday, “Greenland is ours” and “we are not for sale and will never be for sale.” The office of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen – who called Trump’s first-term suggestion that Greenland could be purchased “absurd” – echoed Egede. “The government is looking forward to working with the new [Trump] administration. In a complex security political situation as the one we currently experience, transatlantic cooperation is crucial,” a Monday statement said. “As far as statements about Greenland, the Prime Minister’s Office has no comments other than reference to what was stated by the Premier of Greenland about Greenland not being for sale, but open for cooperation,” the statement added. Trump first discussed the idea privately and publicly confirmed it in 2019, though he ultimately downplayed his interest. “Strategically it’s interesting, and we would be interested, but we will talk with them a little bit,” he said at the time. “It’s not number one on the burner, I can tell you that.” However, he resurfaced the idea on Sunday in a news release announcing PayPay co-founder Ken Howery as his choice to serve as ambassador to Denmark. Trump’s proposal to annex Canada appears far less serious and more so a public needling of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after the two dined recently at Mar-a-Lago. The president-elect has, though, continued to tease the idea on social media. “I think it’s a great idea,” he wrote in a recent post. The episode stems from another Trump provocation, this one to implement 25% tariffs on goods originating from Canada and Mexico, that is illustrative of his approach to negotiating with foreign leaders. In many ways, the gambit delivered the intended result: leaders from both countries immediately sought an audience with Trump to reaffirm their commitment to assist the US on border issues. And it provided an early avenue for Trump to claim victory over a foreign target. “President Trump Is Securing The Border,” his transition team wrote in a recent release, “And He Hasn’t Even Taken Office Yet.”

Chinese hackers preparing for conflict, says US cyber officialI hated the science fiction genre with a passion. In my mind, every sci-fi story always boiled down to uninteresting aliens, inaccessible concepts, and eye-rolling naming conventions. I didn’t understand science fiction until 2007’s Mass Effect . Suddenly, a world of layered characters, political machinations, and enticing lore lay before me. The Mass Effect trilogy ended up being magical — and since, I haven’t felt that brand of adoration for a sci-fi property again. Then, Archetype Entertainment’s Exodus showed up. When I first heard the rumblings of Exodus , I ignored it entirely. They rolled out all the attention-grabbing morsels they knew would get eyes on them. “Hey, here’s Matthew McConaughey! The game’s developed by former BioWare members!” The whole nine yards. But, over time, as more details were unveiled? I started tuning in. Then, Exodus did it. The team knew exactly what to say to command my full attention. Videos by VICE “The debut game from legendary RPG creator James Ohlen’s new studio is a next-generation, story-driven RPG that marries cinematic storytelling with deep emotional impact featuring broad player agency and modern AAA gameplay. The story is fueled by the consequences of player choices due to the impact of Time Dilation, and how they change the lives of those we love most,” Exodus ‘ official website states . ‘exodus’ finally kicked down the door and made itself known Basically, the Exodus pitch is “ Mass Effect on Cocaine.” If there’s one thing a game needs to say to hook me, it’s “Here? Your choices matter .” Sure, gamers have fallen into that particular marketing trap time and again only to end with disappointment. However, we live in a gaming landscape where a game doesn’t have a choice but to live up to the hype. And it’s not like Exodus makes such a bold statement of player agency in passing. No, that’s a large chunk of the game’s pitch . “There are going to be some cool choices that have cascading effects in the game, and the ones where time dilation is in play, those are the most significant in the game, and likely to have the largest ramifications in your story. All the choices you make are gonna affect your progression as a character, and as a Traveler,” Archetype co-founder, Chad Robertson, said during a Q&A session for the game. “Your choices are also going to have an impact on your homeworld and the people you care about, but the wrong choice can change your relationship in ways you can’t anticipate – but maybe that was the right choice for you. Ultimately, it’s your game, and we want to give you the choice to do those things.” Bring it, Exodus . I’m ready to painfully exist in a land of devastating cause and effect!

Lysell was called up from the AHL hours before Boston’s 4-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night. He logged 11:32 of ice time and made a nice play on Justin Brazeau’s first period goal 2:29 into the game. While Lysell didn’t show up on the stat sheet, he had an overall solid debut. “I thought he handled himself well. It’s obviously an exciting night for him, his family. He was on the ice for the first goal, which is always a good feeling,” interim coach Joe Sacco told reporters after Saturday’s game. “And then, he did some good things. He was very responsible. He was trying to be very responsible away from the puck. You could see he was making a conscious effort to be good without the puck, and those are the things that he needs to continue to build into his game. But I thought that he handled himself fine here tonight for his first game.” “I woke up (Saturday) morning, didn’t think of this, and then you get a call and you’re up here so it’s just unbelievable and definitely special for me and my family and everybody that’s helped me along the way,” Lysell told reporters following Saturday’s game. “My whole family’s here. They came down for Christmas and they were actually going to go home I think tomorrow so it turned out well.” Lysell has been close to making the Bruins roster out of training camp the last two seasons. He began the season in the AHL and amassed 17 points in 26 games — including 13 in his last 15 games. The US Navy is to transform three, white elephant, stealth destroyers by fitting them with first-of-their-kind shipborne hypersonic weapons. The USS Zumwalt is at a Mississippi shipyard where workers have installed missile tubes that replace twin turrets from a gun system that was never activated because it was too expensive. Once the system is complete, the Zumwalt will provide a platform for conducting fast, precision strikes from greater distances, adding to the usefulness of the warship. “It was a costly blunder. But the Navy could take victory from the jaws of defeat here, and get some utility out of (the ships) by making them into a hypersonic platform,” said Bryan Clark, a defence analyst at the Hudson Institute. The US has had several types of hypersonic weapons in development for the past two decades, but recent tests by both Russia and China have added pressure to the US military to hasten their production. Hypersonic weapons travel beyond Mach 5, five times the speed of sound, with added manoeuvrability making them harder to shoot down. Last year, The Washington Post newspaper reported that among the documents leaked by former Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira was a defence department briefing that confirmed China had recently tested an intermediate-range hypersonic weapon called the DF-27. While the Pentagon had previously acknowledged the weapon’s development, it had not recognised its testing. One of the US programmes in development and planned for the Zumwalt is the Conventional Prompt Strike. It would launch like a ballistic missile and then release a hypersonic glide vehicle that would travel at speeds seven to eight times faster than the speed of sound before hitting the target. The weapon system is being developed jointly by the Navy and Army. Each of the three Zumwalt-class destroyers would be equipped with four missile tubes, each with three of the missiles for a total of 12 hypersonic weapons per ship. In choosing the Zumwalt, the Navy is attempting to add to the usefulness of a 7.5 billion US dollars (£5.9 billion) warship that is considered by critics to be an expensive mistake despite serving as a test platform for multiple innovations. The Zumwalt was envisioned as providing land-attack capability with an advanced gun system with rocket-assisted projectiles to open the way for Marines to charge ashore. But the system featuring 155mm guns hidden in stealthy turrets was cancelled because each of the rocket-assisted projectiles cost up to one million dollars (£790,000). Despite the stain on their reputation, the three Zumwalt-class destroyers: Zumwalt, Michael Monsoor and Lyndon B Johnson; remain the Navy’s most advanced surface warships in terms of new technologies. Those innovations include electric propulsion, an angular shape to minimise radar signature, an unconventional wave-piercing hull, automated fire and damage control and a composite deckhouse that hides radar and other sensors. The US is accelerating development because hypersonics have been identified as vital to US national security with “survivable and lethal capabilities”, said James Weber, principal director for hypersonics in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Critical Technologies. “Fielding new capabilities that are based on hypersonic technologies is a priority for the defence department to sustain and strengthen our integrated deterrence, and to build enduring advantages,” he said.PHOENIX — A body was found in a canal in Phoenix , the city's fire department said. It appears to be the first challenge in the U.S. to a state shield law that's intended to protect prescribers in Democratic-controlled states from being punished by states with abortion bans. Prescriptions like these, made online and over the phone, are a key reason that the number of abortions has increased across the U.S. even after state bans started taking effect. Most abortions in the U.S. involve pills rather than procedures. Anti-abortion groups are increasingly focusing on the rise of pills. Thousands of Syrians celebrate in central Damascus during first Friday prayers since Assad's fall DAMASCUS (AP) — Thousands of Syrians have celebrated in Umayyad Square, the largest in Damascus, after the first Muslim Friday prayers following the ouster of President Bashar Assad. The leader of the insurgency that toppled Assad, Ahmad al-Sharaa, appeared in a video message in which he congratulated “the great Syrian people for the victory of the blessed revolution.” Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in the Turkish capital of Ankara that there was “broad agreement” between Turkey and the United States on what they would like to see in Syria. The top U.S. diplomat also called for an “inclusive and non-sectarian" interim government. US military flies American released from Syrian prison to Jordan, officials say WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military has brought an American who was imprisoned in Syria for seven months out of the country. That's according to two U.S. officials, who said Friday that Travis Timmerman has been flown to Jordan on a U.S. military helicopter. The 29-year-old Timmerman told The Associated Press earlier Friday he had gone to Syria on a Christian pilgrimage and was not ill-treated while in a notorious detention facility operated by Syrian intelligence. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has asked the Biden administration to put more resources into the ongoing investigation of mysterious drone sightings being reported in the state and other parts of the region. Murphy, a Democrat, made the request in a letter Thursday, noting that state and local law enforcement remain “hamstrung” by existing laws and policies in their efforts to successfully counteract any nefarious drone activity. Murphy and other officials say there is no evidence that the drones pose a national security or a public safety threat. A state lawmaker says up to 180 aircraft have been reported to authorities since Nov. 18. Pelosi is 84. She was in Europe to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Her spokesman, Ian Krager, did not describe the nature of her injury or give any additional details, but a person familiar with the incident said that Pelosi tripped and fell while at an event with the other members of Congress. The person requested anonymity to discuss the fall because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly. Russia targets Ukrainian infrastructure with a massive attack by cruise missiles and drones KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has launched a massive aerial attack against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia fired 93 cruise and ballistic missiles and almost 200 drones in Friday's bombardments. He says it is one of the heaviest bombardments of the country’s energy sector since Russia’s full-scale invasion almost three years ago. He says Ukrainian defenses shot down 81 missiles, including 11 cruise missiles that were intercepted by F-16 warplanes provided by Western allies earlier this year. Zelenskyy renewed his plea for international unity against Russian President Vladimir Putin. But uncertainty surrounds how the war might unfold next year. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to end the war and has thrown into doubt whether vital U.S. military support for Kyiv will continue. Trump’s lawyers rebuff DA's idea for upholding his hush money conviction, calling it 'absurd' NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers are again urging a judge to throw out his hush money conviction. In a court filing Friday, they balked at the prosecution’s “absurd” idea for preserving the verdict by treating the case the way some courts do when a defendant dies before sentencing. The Manhattan district attorney’s office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. Some in seafood industry see Trump as fishermen's friend, but tariffs could make for pricier fish PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump is likely to bring big changes to seafood, one of the oldest sectors of the U.S. economy. Some in the industry believe the returning president will be more responsive to its needs. Economic analysts paint a more complicated picture, as they fear Trump’s pending trade hostilities with major trading partners Canada and China could make an already pricy kind of protein more expensive. Conservationists also fear Trump’s emphasis on deregulation could jeopardize fish stocks already in peril. But many in the commercial fishing and seafood processing industries said they expect Trump to allow fishing in protected areas and crack down on offshore wind expansion. OpenAI's legal battle with Elon Musk reveals internal turmoil over avoiding AI 'dictatorship' A 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and best avoid an artificial intelligence ‘dictatorship’ is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker’s ongoing conversion into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. OpenAI is filing its response Friday. The lawsuit filed nearly a year ago had also accused Lythgoe of sexually assaulting Abdul after she left “American Idol” and became a judge on Lythgoe’s other competition show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Lythgoe said at the time that he was “shocked and saddened” by the allegations, which he called “an appalling smear.”None, Robert F. NEW YORK (AP) — Top-ranked chess player Magnus Carlsen is headed back to the World Blitz Championship on Monday after its governing body agreed to loosen a dress code that got him fined and denied a late-round game in another tournament for refusing to change out of jeans . Lamenting the contretemps, International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich said in a statement Sunday that he'd let World Blitz Championship tournament officials consider allowing “appropriate jeans” with a jacket, and other “elegant minor deviations” from the dress code. He said Carlsen's stand — which culminated in his quitting the tournament Friday — highlighted a need for more discussion “to ensure that our rules and their application reflect the evolving nature of chess as a global and accessible sport.” Carlsen, meanwhile, said in a video posted Sunday on social media that he would play — and wear jeans — in the World Blitz Championship when it begins Monday. “I think the situation was badly mishandled on their side,” the 34-year-old Norwegian grandmaster said. But he added that he loves playing blitz — a fast-paced form of chess — and wanted fans to be able to watch, and that he was encouraged by his discussions with the federation after Friday's showdown. “I think we sort of all want the same thing,” he suggested in the video on his Take Take Take chess app’s YouTube channel. “We want the players to be comfortable, sure, but also relatively presentable.” The events began when Carlsen wore jeans and a sportcoat Friday to the Rapid World Championship, which is separate from but held in conjunction with the blitz event. The chess federation said Friday that longstanding rules prohibit jeans at those tournaments, and players are lodged nearby to make sartorial switch-ups easy if needed. An official fined Carlsen $200 and asked him to change pants, but he refused and wasn't paired for a ninth-round game, the federation said at the time. The organization noted that another grandmaster, Ian Nepomniachtchi, was fined earlier in the day for wearing sports shoes, changed and continued to play. Carlsen has said that he offered to wear something else the next day, but officials were unyielding. He said “it became a bit of a matter of principle,” so he quit the rapid and blitz championships. In the video posted Sunday, he questioned whether he had indeed broken a rule and said changing clothes would have needlessly interrupted his concentration between games. He called the punishment “unbelievably harsh.” “Of course, I could have changed. Obviously, I didn’t want to,” he said, and “I stand by that.” Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. Ange has 'no choice' but to play Werner | 'I'm pulling kids out of school!'

Trump promises to eliminate ‘inconvenient’ and ‘costly’ daylight saving timeVan Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s assistant in the summer and had a four-game interim spell in charge following his compatriot’s sacking in October. He left the club in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s appointment but was only out of work for two weeks after being appointed Leicester’s new manager on a deal until 2027. The 48-year-old had a glittering playing career with United and was disappointed his return had to end so soon. “The moment I took over the interim job what I said was I’m here to help United and to stay to help United, and I meant it,” he said. “So I was disappointed, yeah, very much so, and it hurt I had to leave. “The only job I would take as an assistant was at United because of the bond that I have with the people in the club and the fans. “But in the end I got my head around it because I also understand the new manager. I’m in football long enough, and I’ve managed myself, that you can think of a situation, me being there, I understand. “I spoke to Ruben about it, fair enough to him, the conversation was grateful, man to man, person to person, manager to manager, and that helped a lot to move on and straightaway get into talks with new possibilities which of course lifted my spirits.” The Dutchman takes on a difficult job at the King Power Stadium as he is tasked with keeping Leicester in the Premier League. He inherits an influential dressing room, which has seen a number of managers come and go over the last few years. It’s mutual respect. I also mentioned to the players yesterday that I looked at the squad and started to make phone calls about players, because in football everyone knows everyone,” he said. “With two or three phone calls you hear stories about 20 players and for me it was important that you hear there are good characters there. That’s important, that there are good people there. “I look at the players how they play. I obviously don’t know them but I got general information and the individuals that they are a good bunch of people. That was important for me to get in.”

Santa Fe author Trent Zelazny died on Thursday of acute liver failure on what would have been his 48th birthday, according to a social media post from his sister Shannon Zelazny. Zelazny, the son of late science fiction writer Roger Zelazny, had been suffering from reduced mobility for a number of months following a cerebellar stroke he had in September. “He was still 'my brother' and was making remarkable progress learning how to walk again,” Shannon wrote in social media post on Saturday. "He was then hit with acute liver failure, which resulted in his hospitalization and death. “Tonight, when he should’ve been blowing out the candles on his birthday cake, he made his way out of this world,” wrote Shannon. Zelazny was known for his literary prowess across genres, from crime and horror to science fiction and fantasy. But his horror novels received the most recognition, with his 2012 novel Sleep Gently receiving the Nightmare Award, and his 2009 short story The House of Happy Mayhem receiving honorable mention for Ellen Datlow’s “Best Horror of the Year” award. His career as an author began as early as 1999 with the short stories, Hope is an Inanimate Desire and Harold Asher and His Vomiting Dogs , followed by more short stories Zelazny wrote throughout the early 2000s. His professional writing career came about in 2009 with the publication of The Day the Leash Gave Way and Other Stories , a collected anthology of Zelazny’s short stories, with new stories, and ones that had previously appeared in magazines. Zelazny had by then moved to Florida, where his fiancee committed suicide, and he developed severe alcoholism. In a 2012 interview, he told Stephen C. Ornsby that it was “a lot of hard work and the support of family and friends ... and rehab” that helped him through the difficult time. He resumed his writing in 2011 with the novels Fractal Despondency , Shadowboxer , To Sleep Gently and A Crack in Melancholy Time . His novel Destination Unknown , which was meant to be published in 2008, also finally saw the light of day in 2011. "A powerful and good writer,” attested fellow writer Neil Gaiman in praise of Zelazny’s 2012 novel Too Late to Call Texas . “Someone who's been through hell and come out, I hope, the other side." He wrote several more books, short stories, and even plays — several of which were performed here, like his debut, 2012’s Not Any Little Girl , a one-act play which premiered in Santa Fe. Zelazny was also an active film buff, and regularly contributed to the Santa Fe’s Jean Cocteau Theater, where he wrote “previews” It was also at the Jean Cocteau where Zelazny and George R.R. Martin co-produced GODSON, a musical play written by Zelazny’s father, for whom Martin expressed reverence as a writer. The entire Zelazny family, who welcomed Martin into their home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, according to a 1995 memorial written by Martin following Roger Zelazny’s death. “We’ve been through so much together over the past few years," Shannon wrote of her brother, "our bond was rock solid. There will never be another Trent or anyone who knew me the way he did. Alas, it was his time to go." "He mentioned last week," she added, "that he had lived a full life and made other comments that let me know he had arrived at a deeper level of peace within than he had ever known before. I sure hope that’s what he feels now. His suffering is over. Godspeed big brother. I will miss you for the rest of my days.”Some quotations from Jimmy Carter . We have a tendency to exalt ourselves and to dwell on the weaknesses and mistakes of others. I have come to realize that in every person there is something fine and pure and noble, along with a desire for self-fulfillment. Political and religious leaders must attempt to provide a society within which these human attributes can be nurtured and enhanced. — from 1975 book “Why Not the Best?” Our government can express the highest common ideals of human beings — if we demand of government true standards of excellence. At this Bicentennial time of introspection and concern, we must demand such standards. — “Why Not the Best?” I am a Southerner and an American, I am a farmer, an engineer, a father and husband, a Christian, a politician and former governor, a planner, a businessman, a nuclear physicist, a naval officer, a canoeist, and among other things a lover of Bob Dylan’s songs and Dylan Thomas’s poetry. — “Why Not the Best?” Christ said, “I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery.” I’ve looked on a lot of women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I will do — and I have done it — and God forgives me for it. But that doesn’t mean that I condemn someone who not only looks on a woman with lust but who leaves his wife and shacks up with somebody out of wedlock. — Interview, November 1976 Playboy. This inauguration ceremony marks a new beginning, a new dedication within our Government, and a new spirit among us all. A President may sense and proclaim that new spirit, but only a people can provide it. — Inaugural address, January 1977. It’s clear that the true problems of our nation are much deeper — deeper than gasoline lines or energy shortages, deeper even than inflation and recession. ... All the legislation in the world can’t fix what’s wrong with America. ... It is a crisis of confidence. — So-called “malaise” speech, July 1979. But we know that democracy is always an unfinished creation. Each generation must renew its foundations. Each generation must rediscover the meaning of this hallowed vision in the light of its own modern challenges. For this generation, ours, life is nuclear survival; liberty is human rights; the pursuit of happiness is a planet whose resources are devoted to the physical and spiritual nourishment of its inhabitants. — Farewell Address, January 1981. We appreciate the past. We are grateful for the present and we’re looking forward to the future with great anticipation and commitment. — October 1986, at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Library and Museum. War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn to live together in peace by killing each other’s children. — December 2002, Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. Fundamentalists have become increasingly influential in both religion and government, and have managed to change the nuances and subtleties of historic debate into black-and-white rigidities and the personal derogation of those who dare to disagree. ... The influence of these various trends poses a threat to many of our nation’s historic customs and moral commitments, both in government and in houses of worship. — From 2005 book “Our Endangered Values.” I think that this breakthrough by Barack Obama has been remarkable. When he made his speech (on race) a few months ago in Philadelphia, I wept. I sat in front of the television and cried, because I saw that as the most enlightening and transforming analysis of racism and a potential end of it that I ever saw in my life. — August 2008, commenting on then-Sen. Barack Obama’s candidacy. I think it’s based on racism. There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president. ... No matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect. — September 2009, reacting to Rep. Joe Wilson’s shout of “You lie!” during a speech to Congress by President Barack Obama. I’m still determined to outlive the last guinea worm. — 2010, on The Carter Center’s work to eradicate guinea worm disease. You know how much I raised to run against Gerald Ford? Zero. You know how much I raised to run against Ronald Reagan? Zero. You know how much will be raised this year by all presidential, Senate and House campaigns? $6 billion. That’s 6,000 millions. — September 2012, reacting to the 2010 “Citizens United” U.S. Supreme Court decision permitting unlimited third-party political spending. I have become convinced that the most serious and unaddressed worldwide challenge is the deprivation and abuse of women and girls, largely caused by a false interpretation of carefully selected religious texts and a growing tolerance of violence and warfare, unfortunately following the example set during my lifetime by the United States. — From 2014 book “A Call to Action.” I don’t think there’s any doubt now that the NSA or other agencies monitor or record almost every telephone call made in the United States, including cellphones, and I presume email as well. We’ve gone a long way down the road of violating Americans’ basic civil rights, as far as privacy is concerned. — March 2014, commenting on U.S. intelligence monitoring after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks We accept self-congratulations about the wonderful 50th anniversary - which is wonderful - but we feel like Lyndon Johnson did it and we don’t have to do anything anymore. — April 2014, commenting on racial inequality during a celebration of the Civil Rights Act’s 40th anniversary. I had a very challenging question at Emory (University) the other night: “How would you describe the United States of America today in one word?” And I didn’t know what to say for a few moments, but I finally said, “Searching.” I think the country in which we live is still searching for what it ought to be, and what it can be, and I’m not sure we’re making much progress right at this moment. — October 2014 during a celebration of his 90th birthday. The life we have now is the best of all. We have an expanding and harmonious family, a rich life in our church and the Plains community, and a diversity of projects at The Carter Center that is adventurous and exciting. Rosalynn and I have visited more than 145 countries, and both of us are as active as we have ever been. We are blessed with good health and look to the future with eagerness and confidence, but are prepared for inevitable adversity when it comes. — From 2015 book, “A Full Life.”

Jimmy Carter, the United States’ longest-lived president, was never afraid of speaking his mind. Forthright and fearless, the Nobel Prize winner took pot-shots at former prime minister Tony Blair and ex-US president George W Bush among others. His death came after repeated bouts of illness in which images of the increasingly frail former president failed to erase memories of his fierce spirit. Democrat James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr swept to power in 1977 with his Trust Me campaign helping to beat Republican president Gerald Ford. A skilled sportsman, Mr Carter left his home of Plains, Georgia, to join the US Navy, returning later to run his family’s peanut business. A stint in the Georgia senate lit the touchpaper on his political career and he rose to the top of the Democratic movement. But he will also be remembered for a bizarre encounter with a deeply disgruntled opponent. The president was enjoying a relaxing fishing trip near his home town in 1979 when his craft was attacked by a furious swamp rabbit which reportedly swam up to the boat hissing wildly. The press had a field day, with one paper bearing the headline President Attacked By Rabbit. Away from encounters with belligerent bunnies, Mr Carter’s willingness to address politically uncomfortable topics did not diminish with age. He recently said that he would be willing to travel to North Korea for peace talks on behalf of US President Donald Trump. He also famously mounted a ferocious and personal attack on Tony Blair over the Iraq war, weeks before the prime minister left office in June 2007. Asked how he would characterise Mr Blair’s relationship with Mr Bush, Mr Carter replied: “Abominable. Loyal, blind, apparently subservient. “I think that the almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq have been a major tragedy for the world.” Mr Carter was also voluble over the Rhodesia crisis, which was about to end during his presidency. His support for Robert Mugabe at the time generated widespread criticism. He was said to have ignored the warnings of many prominent Zimbabweans, black and white, about what sort of leader Mugabe would be. This was seen by Mr Carter’s critics as “deserving a prominent place among the outrages of the Carter years”. Mr Carter has since said he and his administration had spent more effort and worry on Rhodesia than on the Middle East. He admitted he had supported two revolutionaries in Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo, and with hindsight said later that Mugabe had been “a good leader gone bad”, having at first been “a very enlightened president”. “In particular, the Jimmy Carter foreign policy... bears some responsibility for the fate of a small African country with scant connection to American national interests.” In recent years Mr Carter developed a reputation as an international peace negotiator. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts, his work with human rights and democracy initiatives, and his promotion of economic and social programmes. Mr Carter was dispatched to North Korea in August 2008 to secure the release of US citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, who had been sentenced to eight years of hard labour after being found guilty of illegally entering North Korea. He successfully secured the release of Mr Gomes. In 2010 he returned to the White House to greet President Barack Obama and discuss international affairs amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula. Proving politics runs in the family, in 2013 his grandson Jason, a state senator, announced his bid to become governor in Georgia, where his famous grandfather governed before becoming president. He eventually lost to incumbent Republican Nathan Deal. It would have been Mr Carter’s 39th trip to personally observe an international election. Three months later, on August 12, he revealed he had cancer which had been diagnosed after he underwent surgery to remove a small mass in his liver. Mr Obama was among the well-wishers hoping for Mr Carter’s full recovery after it was confirmed the cancer had spread widely. Melanoma had been found in his brain and liver, and Mr Carter underwent immunotherapy and radiation therapy, before announcing in March the following year that he no longer needed any treatment. In 2017, Mr Carter was taken to hospital as a precaution, after he became dehydrated at a home-building project in Canada. He was admitted to hospital on multiple occasions in 2019 having had a series of falls, suffering a brain bleed and a broken pelvis, as well as a stint to be treated for a urinary tract infection. Mr Carter spent much of the coronavirus pandemic largely at his home in Georgia, and did not attend Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in 2021, but extended his “best wishes”. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Mr Carter during his term as US president, died in November 2023. She had been living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” Mr Carter said in a statement following her death. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

Bowers has 108 receptions to top the mark set last season by Puka Nacua (105) of the Los Angeles Rams. Bowers' yardage stands at 1,144 after having seven receptions for 77 yards in a 25-10 road victory over the New Orleans Saints. Bowers also set a franchise receptions for catches in a season, surpassing Darren Waller (107 in 2020). "It's awesome," Bowers said of the records in a postgame interview on Fox. "You never know what to expect coming up to the next level. It's been everything and more." Bowers' third catch on Sunday -- a 13-yard grab late in the second quarter against the Saints -- pushed his season total to 1,087 yards. Ditka totaled 1,076 receiving yards in 14 games with the Chicago Bears in 1961. Bowers, 22, set the record for receptions by a rookie tight end earlier this season by eclipsing the total of 86 reeled in by Sam LaPorta of the Detroit Lions in 2023. Bowers was selected by the Raiders with the 13th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite all his catches, he has just four scoring receptions. While with Georgia, Bowers was the first back-to-back winner of the Mackey Award (2022, 2023), which is given to the top tight end in college football. --Field Level Media

Stock market today: Wall Street ends little changed after giving up a big morning gainSCV Food Pantry hosts turkey giveawayThe Yamaha True X Bar 50A is a low-profile, elegant soundbar that'll look good under any TV. The Yamaha True X Bar 50A is available now at a discount, with surround speakers sold separately (and individually). The sound produced by these speakers is rich, deep, well-blended, and spacious. I just wish the setup process was more seamless and simple. For months, I was one hundred percent certain the JBL Bar 1000 soundbar couldn't be beat. It offers incredible clarity of sound, rich bass, and brilliant surround via two wireless speakers. When Yamaha sent me the True X Bar 50A to review, I assumed it wouldn't be able to stand up to the sound the JBL delivered. Given that the Yamaha sells for roughly half the price of the JBL, that assumption was a fairly safe bet. And even though my audiophile ears could easily tell the difference between the two (with the JBL coming out on top), for the money, the Yamaha True X Bar 50A is hard to beat. Also: One of the loudest Bluetooth speakers I've tested is not made by Sonos or Bose One thing to remember is that I was also sent a True X Speaker 1A , which is sold separately and runs for $150 each. If you want surround (which you should), now you're talking about $850 for the whole kit. Another thing to keep in mind is that I only reviewed this connected to my television and didn't opt to test how music might sound via this speaker. For me, a soundbar serves a single purpose... to replace built-in TV speakers that rarely offer sound of much quality. With that in mind, let's dive into the review. Yamaha True X Bar 50A soundbar You'd be hard-pressed to find a better sounding soundbar at this price. The specs Drivers - Front L/R: 4.6 × 6.6 cm (1-3/4 × 2-5/8") cone × 2, Height L/R: 5.2 cm (2") cone × 2, Built-in Subwoofer: 7.5 cm (3") cone × 2, Wireless Subwoofer: 16 cm (6-1/4") cone Output power - 280 W (Front L/R: 30 W × 2-ch, Height L/R: 30 W × 2-ch, Built-in subwoofer: 30 W × 2, Subwoofer: 100W ) Dimensions - Center unit: 1,015 × 63 × 112 mm (40" × 2-1/2" × 4-3/8"), Subwoofer: 187 × 407 × 409 mm (7-3/8" × 16" × 16-1/8") Inputs - HDMI, digital optical Sound technology - Dolby Atmos with stereo, standard, movie, and game modes. Bass extension Wireless streaming The Yamaha sub is on the left and the JBL Bar 1000 sub is on the right. My experience The first thing to note about this soundbar is that the setup can be a bit finicky. It took me several attempts to connect the subwoofer and surround speakers. The issue with the surround speakers turned out to be a low battery -- they needed to be fully charged via USB-C before they would connect. Even then, the setup process is somewhat confusing, requiring you to download a manual on your phone using a QR code for guidance. Also: This stereo amp made me feel like I was hearing my favorite band for the first time For some reason, the subwoofer wouldn't connect right out of the box either. I had to go through the manual setup a few times before it finally linked with the main speaker. But once everything was connected, the difference was impressive. Many soundbars in this price range (without the additional surround speakers) tend to overemphasize midrange frequencies, which makes sense since that's where vocals sit. However, too much focus on the midrange can result in tinny or harsh sound. That's not the case with the True X Bar 50A. Instead, it delivers a well-balanced mix that adds richness to the sound. When the subwoofer kicks in, it adds depth and punch for a more immersive experience. Once everything is set up, the True X Bar 50A is easy to use, thanks to a well-designed remote that lets you switch between modes (Standard, Movie, Music, Game, and All), adjust the bass, and control surround levels. While this soundbar does advertise Dolby Atmos for a more immersive sound experience, mid-range systems like this aren't quite capable of delivering the full effect. The True X Bar 50A gets close but doesn't fully achieve the true Atmos experience. That said, it still fills the room with sound beautifully, and when you add the surround speakers, the sound really comes to life. Also: Philips Fidelio FB1 soundbar is just for audiophiles My only gripe with the surround speakers is that they lack the volume power of a JBL system. With JBL, the sound is so immersive that you sometimes wonder if it's coming from the speakers, somewhere in the house, or even outside. In comparison, the Yamaha is more subtle. Even with the surround speakers set to max, the effect is more understated. However, the All mode, which sends sound to both the main and surround speakers, is a great solution -- especially for watching TV or movies where dialogue can be hard to hear. These surround speakers are small but they produce impressive sound. Hit the All button, and you'll have no trouble understanding dialogue. There's also a Clear Voice option that enhances vocal clarity. I tested it with a few films where the dialogue is notoriously hard to hear, and the Clear Voice feature easily solved that issue. In particular, Oppenheimer —which is known for its challenging dialogue -- sounded crisp and clear with Yamaha's Clear Voice technology. You'll likely find yourself using this feature often, especially with more films leaning into complex sound design. The only downside As I mentioned earlier, setting up the True X Bar 50A isn't as straightforward as it should be. With JBL, it was as simple as unpacking, plugging in, and getting started. The Yamaha setup, on the other hand, requires a bit of patience and luck. But once it's up and running, you're good to go. Also: This is the soundbar I recommend if you have limited space at home (and it's $100 off) Here's a tip: if you purchase the surround speakers, keep the soundbar on once everything is connected. When you turn the soundbar off, you'll have to manually switch each surround speaker back on. While the speakers offer around 12 hours of battery life, I recommend keeping them plugged in via USB-C, especially if you mount them on the wall. If you choose to use them wirelessly, be sure to charge them regularly. Otherwise, you risk losing sound mid-movie—like during Prometheus —and ruining the experience. ZDNET's buying advice If you don't have the budget for a $1,000+ soundbar, but you still want high-quality sound, the Yamaha True X Bar 50A is a brilliant option, especially with Amazon's current discount. And if you can afford it, add the surround speakers for a much more immersive experience. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time for setup, and don't be surprised if you have to go through the steps a few times before everything connects properly. If it weren't for the exceptional sound of the JBL Bar 1000 , the Yamaha True X Bar 50A would easily be my top pick. With its deep, rich bass, well-balanced mids, and crisp highs, this soundbar is a significant upgrade from your TV speakers and will likely outperform any midrange soundbar you're currently using. As a Black woman, she just couldn’t see herself helping to replicate the largest act of resistance against then-President Donald Trump’s first term in January 2017. Even in an election this year where Trump questioned his opponent’s race, held rallies featuring racist insults and falsely claimed Black migrants in Ohio were eating their neighbors’ pets, he didn't just win a second term. He became the first Republican in two decades to clinch the popular vote, although by a small margin. Supporters of Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris hold their fists in the air after she delivered a concession speech after the 2024 presidential election Nov. 6 on the campus of Howard University in Washington. “It’s like the people have spoken and this is what America looks like,” said Smith, the Los Angeles-based founder of the advocacy social media agency, Get Social. “And there’s not too much more fighting that you’re going to be able to do without losing your own sanity.” After Trump was declared the winner over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, many politically engaged Black women said they were so dismayed by the outcome that they were reassessing — but not completely abandoning — their enthusiasm for electoral politics and movement organizing. Black women often carry much of the work of getting out the vote in their communities. They had vigorously supported the historic candidacy of Harris, who would have been the first woman of Black and South Asian descent to win the presidency. Harris' loss spurred a wave of Black women across social media resolving to prioritize themselves, before giving so much to a country that over and over has shown its indifference to their concerns. AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters, found that 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy in the United States was the single most important factor for their vote this year, a higher share than for other demographic groups. But now, with Trump set to return to office in two months, some Black women are renewing calls to emphasize rest, focus on mental health and become more selective about what fight they lend their organizing power to. “America is going to have to save herself,” said LaTosha Brown, co-founder of the national voting rights group Black Voters Matter. She compared Black women’s presence in social justice movements as “core strategists and core organizers” to the North Star, known as the most consistent and dependable star in the galaxy because of its seemingly fixed position in the sky. People can rely on Black women to lead change, Brown said, but the next four years will look different. “That’s not a herculean task that’s for us. We don’t want that title. ... I have no goals to be a martyr for a nation that cares nothing about me,” she said. Supporters cheer during a community rally with Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris on Oct. 27 in Philadelphia. AP VoteCast paints a clear picture of Black women's concerns. Black female voters were most likely to say that democracy was the single most important factor for their vote, compared to other motivators such as high prices or abortion. More than 7 in 10 Black female voters said they were “very concerned” that electing Trump would lead the nation toward authoritarianism, while only about 2 in 10 said this about Harris. About 9 in 10 Black female voters supported Harris in 2024, according to AP VoteCast, similar to the share that backed Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. Trump received support from more than half of white voters, who made up the vast majority of his coalition in both years. Like voters overall, Black women were most likely to say the economy and jobs were the most important issues facing the country, with about one-third saying that. But they were more likely than many other groups to say that abortion and racism were the top issues, and much less likely than other groups to say immigration was the top issue. Despite those concerns, which were well-voiced by Black women throughout the campaign, increased support from young men of color and white women helped expand Trump’s lead and secured his victory. Politically engaged Black women said they don’t plan to continue positioning themselves in the vertebrae of the “backbone” of America’s democracy. The growing movement prompting Black women to withdraw is a shift from history, where they are often present and at the forefront of political and social change. One of the earliest examples is the women’s suffrage movement that led to ratification in 1920 of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. Black women, however, were prevented from voting for decades afterward because of Jim Crow-era literacy tests, poll taxes and laws that blocked the grandchildren of slaves from voting. Most Black women couldn’t vote until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Black women were among the organizers and counted among the marchers brutalized on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama, during the historic march in 1965 from Selma to Montgomery that preceded federal legislation. Decades later, Black women were prominent organizers of the Black Lives Matter movement in response to the deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police and vigilantes. In his 2024 campaign, Trump called for leveraging federal money to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs in government and discussions of race, gender or sexual orientation in schools. His rhetoric on immigration, including false claims that Black Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating cats and dogs, drove support for his plan to deport millions of people. Tenita Taylor, a Black resident of Atlanta who supported Trump this year, said she was initially excited about Harris’ candidacy. But after thinking about how high her grocery bills have been, she feels that voting for Trump in hopes of finally getting lower prices was a form of self-prioritization. “People say, ‘Well, that’s selfish, it was gonna be better for the greater good,''' she said. “I’m a mother of five kids. ... The things that (Democrats) do either affect the rich or the poor.” Where can Black women feel supported and flourish financially? When posed that question, Dr. Lori Martin, a professor of African and African American studies and sociology at Louisiana State University, had this to say: "A livable place for Black women is safe, and for women with children, it is home to schools where all students have access to an excellent education. It would also be diverse, with a visible and thriving Black community, including Black businesses." While the socioeconomic realities of our current time touch all corners of the country, there are pockets of the U.S. where the wealth gap narrows and Black women have more opportunities. MoneyGeek analyzed data on income, the cost of crime , homeownership , and poverty levels from 164 cities across the United States to rank the best — and worst — cities for Black women to live and financially flourish in. MoneyGeek ranked 164 cities with populations greater than 65,000 from the best to the worst for Black women. The ranking includes analysis of income, poverty rate, homeownership, educational attainment and health insurance gaps between Black women and the entire population nationally and locally. The size of the local Black population and the cost of crime in the area were included in the ranking to reflect the presence of the Black community and safety, respectively. Southfield — a suburb of Detroit — and Pearland — a Houston suburb — ranked as the top two cities in the analysis. Notably, Southern cities make up the majority of cities in the top 25, with 13 located in this region. In contrast, Minneapolis, Minnesota, ranked as the worst city for Black women. In Minneapolis, Black women face high poverty rates in absolute and relative terms and have low rates of health insurance coverage compared to the cities analyzed. Meanwhile, Miami ranks as the second least favorable city, with a significant local income gap — there, white men earn almost triple the income of Black women. Income disparity is a key measure of how well Black women are doing today. For each city in the analysis, we calculated the local Equal Pay Day — the day in the following year when Black women would make an equivalent amount as white men — using the median income of Black women working full time and the median income of white men working full time in each locality. In Carson, California, the median pay of Black women is higher than the median pay of white men. However, in Evanston, Illinois, Black women make just over a third of white men's earnings, meaning they would need to work until September 24, 2024, to earn the equivalent of a white man's 2022 pay. Economic challenges faced by Black women include restricted career advancement opportunities, insufficient health insurance, and inadequate retirement savings. Survey data from Goldman Sachs indicates that 42% of Black women perceive limited career growth opportunities compared to 35% of U.S. adults, and merely 43% are able to obtain health insurance through their employer, in contrast to 53% nationwide. Additionally, 71% of Black women feel they are living paycheck to paycheck, compared to 63% of the general population. The intersection of racial and gender bias contributes to these challenges, resulting in low-wage jobs and a considerable wealth gap. Our analysis validates this, demonstrating that Black women who work full-time, year-round, earn 64 cents for every dollar white men earn working full-time, year-round. Less access to economic opportunities puts Black women at a disadvantage in building wealth. The FDIC's National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households found that 11.3% of Black households were unbanked compared to just 2.1% of white households. Unbanked households are credit invisible — that is, they don't have a credit history and, therefore, can't build credit. Having no credit history makes it difficult to utilize credit cards to manage cash needs and mortgages to buy homes. Advocating for economic opportunities for Black women The struggle for economic equity remains a persistent challenge for Black women in America, who have historically faced systemic wage disparities and employment obstacles. However, there are tools and resources that can provide Black women with economic opportunities and empowerment. Dr. Ukanwa shares additional solutions, such as: 1. Invest in education: Research has already shown that degrees increase lifetime earnings, close some societal gaps, and increase job security. But if degrees are not your path, it also means continuing to build that knowledge and expertise in something you can be the best at. Figure out your expertise and what you bring to the table. 2. After building your expertise in a field, build your reputation and personal brand: With an excellent reputation and personal brand, people will start to seek you out rather than the other way around. This increases the worth of your expertise. 3. Find out what your expertise is worth: Educate yourself on how to negotiate . Negotiate to be paid what you are worth. 4. Get into the habit of ownership: Build your own equity, which decreases the dependence on someone else for your income. For example, this could be your own business, stocks , or real estate. To rank the best cities for Black women, MoneyGeek analyzed data from the American Community Survey , MoneyGeek's Safest Cities and Safest Small Cities and Towns studies, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The analysis started with over 500 places in America with populations of 65,000 or more. Places without granular data about Black women or lacking other data points for the analysis were removed to get to the final set of 164 cities. The ranking of the best cities for Black women was based on eight factors: safety, Black population, educational attainment, poverty rates, income, employment, health insurance, and homeownership. Each factor was weighted equally and scaled to a score between 0 and 1. The factors were calculated as follows: Safety (full weight): This metric equally comprises two metrics. Percent of local population that is Black (full weight): This percentage represents the proportion of Black individuals within a city's total population, as reported by the United States Census Bureau's five-year American Community Survey (ACS) from 2021, the most recent data available. Educational attainment (full weight): This metric equally comprises two metrics. Poverty rate (full weight): The percentage point difference between the city's rate of Black women earning at or above the poverty level and the rate of all women living above the poverty level nationally. This finding comes from the 2021 Census ACS five-year data, the latest available source covering over 200 cities. Income (full weight): This factor equally comprises two metrics. Employment (full weight): The difference in percentage points between the Black female employment rate and the white male employment rate in the locality. Health insurance (full weight): This metric reveals the percentage point difference between Black women (ages 19-64) and white men (ages 19-64) with health insurance. This information comes from the Census ACS five-year data from 2021, the most recent data source available. Black female homeownership (full weight): This factor comprises three metrics. North Carolina has interviewed former New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick for its head coaching position, two people with knowledge of the situation said Thursday. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school isn’t commenting publicly on its search. Belichick’s interview, first reported by Inside Carolina, comes a week after the school fired its winningest coach in College Football Hall of Famer Mack Brown. The school announced Nov. 26 that Brown wouldn’t return for a seventh season in his second stint at the school, with Brown staying on to coach last weekend’s rivalry loss to N.C. State. Former Cleveland Browns coach Freddie Kitchens is working as the interim coach for an upcoming bowl game as UNC conducts it search. Moving on from the 73-year-old Brown to hire the 72-year-old Belichick would mean UNC is turning to a coach who has never worked at the college level, yet had incredible NFL success alongside quarterback Tom Brady throughout most of his 24-year tenure with the Patriots that ended last season . In the time since, he had been linked to NFL jobs , notably the Atlanta Falcons in January. It’s changed so much.” In an UNC-produced podcast earlier this week, athletic director Bubba Cunningham said all the coaches the school is talking with about its job “are playing,” with college football having reached its conference title games before unveiling the 12-team College Football Playoff and bowl assignments. Cunningham said then that “fit” was the most important thing in finding Brown’s successor. “There’s a certain person that’s best suited at the right time, at the right place,” he said. “And right now, that’s we’re looking for: Where are we today, who can lead us in the next three, five, 10 years?” ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. All rights reserved.Maulana Fazlur Rehman's JUI-F once again prevailed as President Asif Ali Zardari withdrew his objections to a piece of legislation with regard to registration of religious seminaries and turned it into an act of parliament by giving it his seal of approval. After the president's nod, the National Assembly Secretariat on Sunday published the Societies Registration (Amendment) Act, 2024 in the official gazette. Along with the act, the president also issued an ordinance amending some sections of the new law. Parliament had approved the Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2024 moved by the JUI-F apparently in return for the party's support to the ruling coalition in the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment in October this year. President Zardari, who is the co-chairman of the PPP, however, returned the bill to the National Assembly without signing it. Raising objections to the bill, the president referred to the existing laws and argued that the presence of these laws negated the necessity for new legislation. He had also expressed fear that there was a possibility of international criticism and adverse reactions from bodies like the FATF, an organization which seeks to curb money laundering and terror financing. Approval of the bill might influence Pakistan's ratings and perceptions, he added. The refusal of Zardari to sign the bill created a political crisis with the JUI-F threatening to march on Islamabad "to protect the freedom of madaris". Later, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had met with Maulana Fazl on December 20 to resolve the crisis. On Friday, the federal cabinet approved the amendments in the Societies Registration Act of 1860, deciding that the act will first be passed as it is and then the president will issue an ordinance amending the act, allowing madrassas to register themselves either under the societies or the education ministry. According to the Societies Registration (Amendment) Act, 2024 religious seminaries established before the implementation of the amendment must register within six months, while those established after the bill's enactment will have one year to complete registration. The bill specifies that madrassas with multiple campuses will require only a single registration. Each madrassa will submit an annual report of its activities to the registrar. Under the new law, every madrasa must have its accounts audited and submit the audit report to the registrar. The law prohibits any madrasa from publishing or teaching materials that promote extremism or religious hatred. As per the law, all madrassas are required to gradually integrate basic contemporary subjects into their curriculum based on available resources. Moreover, madrassas will not need to register under any other law after being registered under this act, nor will they require re-registration under any future legal framework. Separately, President Asif Ali Zardari, on the advice of the prime minister, issued a presidential ordinance amending the Societies Registration (Amendment) Act, 2024. The ordinance, effective for 120 days, introduces sub-clauses to Sections 5, 6, and 7 of the Act, providing legal protection to 18,600 madrassas registered under the Directorate General of Religious Education (DGRE), operating under the Ministry of Education. Under the ordinance, all madrassas are mandated to prioritise financial audits. Madrassas registered under the Ministry of Education will not require re-registration. The amendment allows madrassas the flexibility to register either under the Ministry of Education or the Societies Registration Act. Those already registered with the DGRE will be considered legally registered. Ahead of the promulgation of the notification, President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday met a JUI-F delegation in Larkana. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also present on the occasion. During the meeting, the PPP leadership and JUI-F Sindh leaders held detailed discussions on the political situation as well as the bill. Zardari assured the delegation that their concerns would be addressed and the matter would be resolved at the earliest. A search for a convicted murderer in a California town has put residents on edge, with schools closing and Christmas events being postponed Cesar Hernandez, who was sentenced in 2019 to 80 years to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, escaped Monday morning shortly after arriving at the Kern County courthouse in Delano, a city of around 50,000 in central California. As of Thursday, he had still not been found. He was being transported to appear in court after pleading no contest to manufacturing a weapon and possessing alcohol or drugs in prison when he evaded staff and jumped out of the van, officials said. Cesar Guzmán, 32, was only blocks away at his barber shop from the intersection where Hernandez escaped. It’s been the “number one topic at the shop” since. “Everyday we talk about it,” Guzmán said. “The clients are, they’re scared because they haven’t found him. We’re really close to where it happened.” Delano has been inundated with a heavy law enforcement presence since Hernandez’s escape, with police knocking on doors and helicopters whirring overhead. Guzmán said it’s the first time something like this has happened in the town, where he has lived his whole life. Several local schools locked down Monday, and they remained closed through Thursday as the search continued, local school districts posted on Facebook. The city postponed its tree-lighting ceremony originally scheduled for Wednesday, and the Delano Chamber of Commerce delayed its annual Christmas parade scheduled for Thursday night. Hernandez remaining at large puts a damper on the festivities, which Guzmán and his family have attended every year. “Honestly, now we’re kind of like, ‘How can he get away from them? What the heck happened?’” Guzmán said. Hernandez, 34, was last seen wearing an orange top and pants. He is 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighs about 160 pounds, and has brown eyes and black hair. He was transferred from Los Angeles County in June 2019. “Hernandez is considered dangerous,” Delano police said in a social media post. “If you see him, do not approach.” Anyone who sees Hernandez or has knowledge of his location is asked to contact law enforcement or call 911. On the other side of the country, another search was underway for the man who United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York on Monday. Police were following tips related to his whereabouts, including searching two hostels where the man may have stayed. Jaimie Ding, The Associated PressInter Allies Fall Narrowly to Okwawu United in HoArteta wanted his team to prove their European credentials following some underwhelming displays away from home, and the Gunners manager got exactly what he asked for. Goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhaes, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard got their continental campaign back on track in style following the 1-0 defeat at Inter Milan last time out. A memorable victory also ended Sporting’s unbeaten start to the season, a streak of 17 wins and one draw, the vast majority of which prompted Manchester United to prise away head coach Ruben Amorim. The Gunners had failed to win or score in their two away games in the competition so far this season, but they made a blistering start in the Portuguese capital and took the lead after only seven minutes. Declan Rice fed overlapping full-back Jurrien Timber, who curled a low cross in behind the home defence for Martinelli to finish at the far post. Arsenal doubled their lead in the 20th minute thanks to a glorious ball over the top from Thomas Partey. Saka escaped the clutches of his marker Maximiliano Araujo to beat the offside trap and poke the ball past advancing goalkeeper Franco Israel for Havertz to tap home. It was a scintillating first-half display which completely overshadowed the presence of Viktor Gyokeres in Sporting’s attack. The prolific Sweden striker, formerly of Coventry, has been turning the heads of Europe’s top clubs with his 24 goals in 17 games this season – including a hat-trick against Manchester City earlier this month. But the only time he got a sniff of a run at goal after an optimistic long ball, he was marshalled out of harm’s way by Gabriel. David Raya was forced into one save, tipping a fierce Geovany Quenda drive over the crossbar. But Arsenal added a third on the stroke of half-time, Gabriel charging in to head Rice’s corner into the back of the net. To rub salt in the wound, the Brazilian defender mimicked Gyokeres’ hands-over-his-face goal celebration. That may have wound Sporting up as they came out after the interval meaning business, and they pulled one back after Raya tipped Hidemasa Morita’s shot behind, with Goncalo Inacio netting at the near post from the corner. Former Tottenham winger Marcus Edwards fired over, as did Gyokeres, with Arsenal temporarily on the back foot. But when Martin Odegaard’s darting run into the area was halted by Ousmane Diomande’s foul, Saka tucked away the penalty. Substitute Trossard added the fifth with eight minutes remaining, heading in the rebound after Mikel Merino’s shot was saved, and Gyokeres’ miserable night was summed up when his late shot crashed back off the post.

Pigeon (OTCMKTS:PGENY) Shares Down 8% – Time to Sell?Manchester City's struggles continued as Pep Guardiola's side remarkably blew a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday, while Bayern Munich beat Paris Saint-Germain to leave the French club in danger of elimination. There were also big wins for Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen, while Inter Milan went top of the standings after five games and Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski reached a century of Champions League goals. However, the biggest drama came at the Etihad Stadium, where City were cruising early in the second half with a three-goal advantage as they sought to end a run of five successive defeats in all competitions. Erling Haaland opened the scoring from a penalty just before half-time, and Ilkay Gundogan's deflected shot made it 2-0 in the 50th minute. Haaland struck again to make it 3-0, but Feyenoord's comeback began on 75 minutes when Anis Hadj Moussa took advantage of hapless defending to round goalkeeper Ederson and pull one back. Substitute Santiago Gimenez bundled in to make it 3-2 on 82 minutes and the equaliser arrived a minute from the end. Ederson was again caught out with Igor Paixao going around the goalkeeper and crossing for Slovak international David Hancko to head in. "We concede a lot of goals because we are not stable," complained Guardiola. "We lost a lot of games lately. We are fragile and of course we need a victory." It is the first time that a team has gone into the last 20 minutes of a Champions League game trailing by three goals and still avoided defeat, as the point boosts the Dutch side's hopes of progressing. City are two points outside the top eight places which offer direct qualification for the last 16, while Bayern moved above them by beating PSG 1-0 in Munich. South Korean defender Kim Min-jae scored the only goal seven minutes before half-time, heading in after goalkeeper Matvei Safonov failed to clear a corner. PSG had Ousmane Dembele sent off in the second half and the French champions have just four points, and three goals, from five games. They are a lowly 26th in the 36-team league, a point adrift of the positions which offer a place in the play-off round in February. "We need to win our last three matches, otherwise we risk being eliminated," admitted PSG coach Luis Enrique. Lewandowski notched his 100th goal in the competition with an early penalty in Barcelona's 3-0 home win over French side Brest. Dani Olmo netted midway through the second half before Lewandowski sealed Barca's win at the death, his 101st goal in the Champions League -- only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have scored more. Inter lead the standings with 13 points, a point ahead of Barcelona and Liverpool, after a 1-0 win at home to RB Leipzig which means they are also still yet to concede a goal. Castello Lukeba's own goal made the difference at San Siro, and Leipzig are one of only three teams to have lost five games out of five. Arsenal romped to a 5-1 victory away to Sporting in Lisbon, as the Portuguese side adapt to life without coach Ruben Amorim, who has departed for Manchester United. Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Magalhaes all scored in the first half for Arsenal, before Goncalo Inacio pulled one back shortly after the restart. Bukayo Saka converted a penalty on 65 minutes after Martin Odegaard had been brought down, and Leandro Trossard headed in to seal Arsenal's win late on. Atalanta romped to a 6-1 win over rock-bottom Young Boys in Switzerland, with Mateo Retegui and Charles De Ketelaere both scoring braces. Sead Kolasinac and Lazar Samardzic also netted for the Italians, with Silvere Ganvoula getting the hosts' reply. Florian Wirtz struck twice, including a penalty, as Leverkusen crushed Red Bull Salzburg 5-0, with Alejandro Grimaldo scoring a superb free-kick and Patrik Schick and Aleix Garcia also netting. Julian Alvarez and substitute Angel Correa each scored twice and Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann once as Atletico romped to a 6-0 win away to Sparta Prague. Christian Pulisic, Rafael Leao and Tammy Abraham were the scorers in AC Milan's 3-2 win at Slovan Bratislava, whose goals came from Tigran Barseghyan and Nino Marcelli. Marko Tolic saw red at the end for Slovan, who are without a point. as/nf337 jili slot login

FOX News Channel Commands Largest Cable News Share in Its History as MSNBC and CNN Ratings Collapse ContinuesLONGBOAT KEY, Fla., Nov. 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rumble ( NASDAQ:RUM ), the video-sharing platform and cloud services provider, today sued the California Attorney General and Secretary of State over a recently passed law that unconstitutionally punishes certain political speech. Rumble is represented by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a non-profit law firm that defends the right to speak freely and which also represents the satirical website "The Babylon Bee” in a related lawsuit. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division. The law at issue, AB 2655, requires online platforms to receive reports about posts related to elections, public officials, and candidates for office that are deemed "materially deceptive” and then remove or label the content. The law was fast-tracked in July when California Gov. Gavin Newsom complained that an online video satirizing the Democratic candidate for president, Kamala Harris, ought to be "illegal.” The state legislature responded by passing a package of bills, which Newsom signed. He subsequently celebrated that he had successfully banned the video that had offended him in the first place. "The very thought of the government judging the content of political speech, and then deciding whether it should be permitted, censored, or eliminated altogether is about the most chilling thing you could imagine,” said Chris Pavlovski, Chairman and CEO of Rumble. "Rumble will always celebrate freedom and support creative independence, so we're delighted to work with ADF to help protect lawful online expression.” ABOUT RUMBLE Rumble is a high-growth video platform and cloud services provider that is creating an independent infrastructure. Winnipeg Jets forward Nino Niederreiter and two visiting buddies from Switzerland found themselves playing the role of Good Samaritans as they saved some stranded motorists from the side of a snow-swept road last week. “You could just tell they weren’t going to be going anywhere,” Niederreiter told the Free Press on Sunday as he recounted the Boxing Day incident near La Salle in a one-on-one interview following his team’s practice at the Hockey For All Centre. Kyusung Gong/ Associated Press files Winnipeg Jets forward Nino Niederreiter had assists off the ice this past week, helping stranded motorists from the side of a snow-swept road. “It was pretty windy out there, and some of the side roads were blown over and hadn’t been plowed. We saw a couple cars had got stuck, someone was out shovelling, so we pulled one family out, and then went a different way and there was another guy who was struggling. We helped that guy out, too.” In the first case, a young couple and their mother had been trying to shovel their way out of trouble. “The one guy recognized me immediately,” Niederreiter said with a laugh. The 32-year-old is a true power forward who isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty in front of the opposing net, so his strength came in handy for this non-hockey related task. “We helped him shovel out the car, and then we all pushed him out. We got some good grip there,” he said. In the second incident, Niederreiter used his vehicle to tow a stuck truck out of the snowbank. “He had everything pretty much set up so we just hooked him on to my car and pulled him out that way,” he said. “It definitely was cold. The wind was really going. But we were ready for it.” Indeed they were, since the purpose of this excursion about 30 kilometres south of Winnipeg was to go snowmobiling. Niederreiter’s financial planner, who lives in Winnipeg, had arranged for them to go on a guided tour. Given that there was no way to go all the way home to Switzerland for what was just a three-day player break, this seemed like a perfect way to enjoy some time away from the rink — even if it didn’t initially go as planned. “What should have probably taken 30 minutes to get to ended up taking about an hour and a half. We were way late to get there,” said Niederreiter. “But once we did, it was a lot of fun. We snowmobiled down the rivers, and it was just awesome.” Niederreiter is no stranger to snow and cold given his roots, but this was actually his first time on the back of a snowmobile. “It was very cool. The first 30 minutes we were kind of really cautious, but then as you go along you start racing a little bit,” he said. Niederreiter is now in his second full season with Winnipeg, and third overall, and said this really drove home what a tight-knit and hockey-crazed community this is. “It was fun. And it’s probably also good for them to see that we are just regular people like everyone else,” he said. “Obviously we are fortunate to have certain talent to play in this league, so it’s kind of cool to see that everybody is the same.” Niederreiter is under contract for two more years at US$4 million and has become an integral part of the NHL’s No. 1 team at 26-10-1 following Saturday’s 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators as the post-Christmas schedule got underway. While playing on a shutdown line with Adam Lowry and Mason Appleton, he has 19 points (10G, 9A) in 37 games so far this year, which has him on pace for his most productive offensive season since 2016-17 when he was a member of the Minnesota Wild. Niederreiter will face his former team, the Nashville Predators, on Monday night at Canada Life Centre — career game No. 925. He’s on track to hit the 1,000 game mark early next season. While Winnipeg has been one of the league’s biggest success stories so far, Nashville is the polar opposite. They limp to town with an 11-18-7 record — 30th overall in the 32-team league. This, despite adding prominent free agent forwards Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault in free agency last summer, along with defenceman Brady Skjei. “I would say the whole league is surprised where they are in the standings,” said Niederrieter, who was acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Predators in February 2023. “If you look at some of the moves they made in the summer and if you look at them on paper, they’re supposed to be a powerhouse. But they’re kind of struggling. Who knows if they will find their way, find their groove, but obviously they have a lot of catching up to do if they want to get into the playoffs.” Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. The Jets will fly to Denver immediately after Monday’s game to face the Colorado Avalanche on New Year’s Eve. They’ll then return home to play eight straight games at Canada Life Centre, which should provide Niederreiter with plenty of opportunities to hit the trails another time. “My girlfriend has never done it, so I’m definitely going to back there on a day off and go for a cruise for a couple hours down the river,” he said. “I’m into nature. It’s so beautiful out there. Just have to make sure it’s a day where it’s not too cold.” mike.mcintyre@freepress.mb.ca X and Bluesky: @mikemcintyrewpg Mike McIntyre is a sports reporter whose primary role is covering the Winnipeg Jets. A high-speed passenger train collided with a fire engine at a crossing on Saturday in Florida, injuring three firefighters and at least a dozen train passengers, authorities said. The crash happened at 10.45am in crowded downtown Delray Beach, multiple news outlets reported. The Brightline train was stopped on the tracks, its front destroyed, about a block away from the Delray Beach fire rescue truck, its ladder ripped off and strewn in the grass several yards away, The Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported. The Delray Beach Fire Rescue said in a social media post that three Delray Beach firefighters were in stable condition at a hospital. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue took 12 people from the train to the hospital with minor injuries. Emmanuel Amaral rushed to the scene on his golf cart after hearing a loud crash and screeching train brakes from where he was having breakfast a couple of blocks away. He saw firefighters climbing out of the window of their damaged truck and pulling injured colleagues away from the tracks. One of their helmets came to rest several hundred feet away from the crash. “The front of that train is completely smashed, and there was even some of the parts to the fire truck stuck in the front of the train, but it split the car right in half. It split the fire truck right in half, and the debris was everywhere,” Mr Amaral said. Brightline officials did not immediately comment on the crash. A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board said it was still gathering information about the crash and had not decided yet whether it will investigate. The NTSB is already investigating two crashes involving Brightline’s high-speed trains that killed three people early this year at the same crossing along the railroad’s route between Miami and Orlando. More than 100 people have died after being hit by trains since Brightline began operations in July 2017 – giving the railroad the worst death rate in the United States. But most of those deaths have been either suicides, pedestrians who tried to run across the tracks ahead of a train or drivers who went around crossing gates instead of waiting for a train to pass. Brightline has not been found to be at fault in those previous deaths. We do not moderate comments, but we expect readers to adhere to certain rules in the interests of open and accountable debate.UW men dominate NJIT in nonconference finale

During a weekly interview with 105.3 The Fan, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that he isn’t ruling out the possibility of giving head coach Mike McCarthy a contract extension when this season ends. “I don’t think that’s crazy at all,” Jones said . “That’s not crazy. Listen, Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach... This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there and done that. He has great ideas. Bottom line is that no place in my body language or anything else have you seen indications about what we’re going to be doing relative to this (coaching) staff at the end of this year. And we shouldn’t. We got a lot of football left.” Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it’s “not crazy” to think Mike McCarthy could receive a contract extension. Since joining the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, Mike McCarthy has accumulated a record of 48-32, including three consecutive 12-win seasons. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you hate the Dallas Cowboys), McCarthy has a 1-3 record in the playoffs as the leader of the Cowboys with his lone win coming against the 8-9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022. Through 11 games this season, the Cowboys are 4-7 with wins over the Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. Is Jerry Jones Serious? There is no way of knowing how legitimate this proposal is. Jones may be trying to zig when everybody is expecting him to zag. Since last season, talking heads and media personalities have said that Jones will let McCarthy’s contract run out at the end of the 2024-25 campaign. Jones could be so bitter and spiteful that he would give McCarthy a one-year contract extension just to stick it to the media. After all, this is the guy who hinted at having a pair of radio hosts fired just a month ago. Either way, it would be unwise to bring back McCarthy on a new contract. This upcoming coaching cycle will have several exciting candidates. Bill Belichick, Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Todd Monken, Kliff Kingsbury and Robert Saleh are just some of the people who will considered for head coaching gigs this offseason. It would be foolish to pass on any of those candidates for a guy who hasn’t won a playoff game since Jan. 16th, 2023. Mike McCarthy is a good coach. He has a win percentage of .610 with Dallas and turned around a broken Cowboys team after just one season. With that being said, it feels like McCarthy has worn out his welcome in Dallas. The Cowboys need new blood if they want to actually win something meaningful this century. But with Jerry Jones still serving as the franchise’s GM, that probably won’t happen. Realistically, Jones will let McCarthy’s contract run out and then bring in a person who has previous head coaching experience. Bill Belichick won’t put up with Jones’s ego, so Saleh, Kingsbury or somebody else will likely be the head coach of the Cowboys when the 2025 season starts. Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer who won the presidency in the wake of the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, endured humbling defeat after one tumultuous term and then redefined life after the White House as a global humanitarian, has died. He was 100 years old. The longest-lived American president died on Sunday, more than a year after entering hospice care , at his home in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died at 96 in November 2023 , spent most of their lives, The Carter Center said. “Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia,” the center said in posting about his death on the social media platform X. It added in a statement that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. x Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia. pic.twitter.com/aqYmcE9tXi — The Carter Center (@CarterCenter) December 29, 2024 Businessman, Navy officer, evangelist, politician, negotiator, author, woodworker, citizen of the world — Carter forged a path that still challenges political assumptions and stands out among the 45 men who reached the nation’s highest office. The 39th president leveraged his ambition with a keen intellect, deep religious faith and prodigious work ethic, conducting diplomatic missions into his 80s and building houses for the poor well into his 90s. “My faith demands — this is not optional — my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference,” Carter once said. A moderate Democrat, Carter entered the 1976 presidential race as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad smile, outspoken Baptist mores and technocratic plans reflecting his education as an engineer. His no-frills campaign depended on public financing, and his promise not to deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter repeated before narrowly beating Republican incumbent Gerald Ford, who had lost popularity pardoning Nixon. Carter governed amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over racism, women’s rights and America’s global role. His most acclaimed achievement in office was a Mideast peace deal that he brokered by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at the bargaining table for 13 days in 1978. That Camp David experience inspired the post-presidential center where Carter would establish so much of his legacy. Yet Carter’s electoral coalition splintered under double-digit inflation, gasoline lines and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His bleakest hour came when eight Americans died in a failed hostage rescue in April 1980, helping to ensure his landslide defeat to Republican Ronald Reagan. Carter acknowledged in his 2020 “White House Diary” that he could be “micromanaging” and “excessively autocratic,” complicating dealings with Congress and the federal bureaucracy. He also turned a cold shoulder to Washington’s news media and lobbyists, not fully appreciating their influence on his political fortunes. “It didn’t take us long to realize that the underestimation existed, but by that time we were not able to repair the mistake,” Carter told historians in 1982, suggesting that he had “an inherent incompatibility” with Washington insiders. Carter insisted his overall approach was sound and that he achieved his primary objectives — to “protect our nation’s security and interests peacefully” and “enhance human rights here and abroad” — even if he fell spectacularly short of a second term. Ignominious defeat, though, allowed for renewal. The Carters founded The Carter Center in 1982 as a first-of-its-kind base of operations, asserting themselves as international peacemakers and champions of democracy, public health and human rights. “I was not interested in just building a museum or storing my White House records and memorabilia,” Carter wrote in a memoir published after his 90th birthday. “I wanted a place where we could work.” That work included easing nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, helping to avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and negotiating cease-fires in Bosnia and Sudan. By 2022, The Carter Center had declared at least 113 elections in Latin America, Asia and Africa to be free or fraudulent. Recently, the center began monitoring U.S. elections as well. Carter’s stubborn self-assuredness and even self-righteousness proved effective once he was unencumbered by the Washington order, sometimes to the point of frustrating his successors . He went “where others are not treading,” he said, to places like Ethiopia, Liberia and North Korea, where he secured the release of an American who had wandered across the border in 2010. “I can say what I like. I can meet whom I want. I can take on projects that please me and reject the ones that don’t,” Carter said. He announced an arms-reduction-for-aid deal with North Korea without clearing the details with Bill Clinton’s White House. He openly criticized President George W. Bush for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He also criticized America’s approach to Israel with his 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” And he repeatedly countered U.S. administrations by insisting North Korea should be included in international affairs, a position that most aligned Carter with Republican President Donald Trump. Among the center’s many public health initiatives, Carter vowed to eradicate the guinea worm parasite during his lifetime, and nearly achieved it: Cases dropped from millions in the 1980s to nearly a handful. With hardhats and hammers, the Carters also built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The Nobel committee’s 2002 Peace Prize cites his “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” Carter should have won it alongside Sadat and Begin in 1978, the chairman added. Carter accepted the recognition saying there was more work to be done. “The world is now, in many ways, a more dangerous place,” he said. “The greater ease of travel and communication has not been matched by equal understanding and mutual respect.” Carter’s globetrotting took him to remote villages where he met little “Jimmy Carters,” so named by admiring parents. But he spent most of his days in the same one-story Plains house — expanded and guarded by Secret Service agents — where they lived before he became governor. He regularly taught Sunday School lessons at Maranatha Baptist Church until his mobility declined and the coronavirus pandemic raged. Those sessions drew visitors from around the world to the small sanctuary where Carter will receive his final send-off after a state funeral at Washington’s National Cathedral. The common assessment that he was a better ex-president than president rankled Carter and his allies. His prolific post-presidency gave him a brand above politics, particularly for Americans too young to witness him in office. But Carter also lived long enough to see biographers and historians reassess his White House years more generously. His record includes the deregulation of key industries, reduction of U.S. dependence on foreign oil, cautious management of the national debt and notable legislation on the environment, education and mental health. He focused on human rights in foreign policy, pressuring dictators to release thousands of political prisoners . He acknowledged America’s historical imperialism, pardoned Vietnam War draft evaders and relinquished control of the Panama Canal. He normalized relations with China. “I am not nominating Jimmy Carter for a place on Mount Rushmore,” Stuart Eizenstat, Carter’s domestic policy director, wrote in a 2018 book. “He was not a great president” but also not the “hapless and weak” caricature voters rejected in 1980, Eizenstat said. Rather, Carter was “good and productive” and “delivered results, many of which were realized only after he left office.” Madeleine Albright, a national security staffer for Carter and Clinton’s secretary of state, wrote in Eizenstat’s forward that Carter was “consequential and successful” and expressed hope that “perceptions will continue to evolve” about his presidency. “Our country was lucky to have him as our leader,” said Albright, who died in 2022. Jonathan Alter, who penned a comprehensive Carter biography published in 2020, said in an interview that Carter should be remembered for “an epic American life” spanning from a humble start in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing through decades on the world stage across two centuries. “He will likely go down as one of the most misunderstood and underestimated figures in American history,” Alter told The Associated Press. James Earl Carter Jr. was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains and spent his early years in nearby Archery. His family was a minority in the mostly Black community, decades before the civil rights movement played out at the dawn of Carter’s political career. Carter, who campaigned as a moderate on race relations but governed more progressively, talked often of the influence of his Black caregivers and playmates but also noted his advantages: His land-owning father sat atop Archery’s tenant-farming system and owned a main street grocery. His mother, Lillian , would become a staple of his political campaigns. Seeking to broaden his world beyond Plains and its population of fewer than 1,000 — then and now — Carter won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1946. That same year he married Rosalynn Smith, another Plains native, a decision he considered more important than any he made as head of state. She shared his desire to see the world, sacrificing college to support his Navy career. Carter climbed in rank to lieutenant, but then his father was diagnosed with cancer, so the submarine officer set aside his ambitions of admiralty and moved the family back to Plains. His decision angered Rosalynn, even as she dived into the peanut business alongside her husband. Carter again failed to talk with his wife before his first run for office — he later called it “inconceivable” not to have consulted her on such major life decisions — but this time, she was on board. “My wife is much more political,” Carter told the AP in 2021. He won a state Senate seat in 1962 but wasn’t long for the General Assembly and its back-slapping, deal-cutting ways. He ran for governor in 1966 — losing to arch-segregationist Lester Maddox — and then immediately focused on the next campaign. Carter had spoken out against church segregation as a Baptist deacon and opposed racist “Dixiecrats” as a state senator. Yet as a local school board leader in the 1950s he had not pushed to end school segregation even after the Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision, despite his private support for integration. And in 1970, Carter ran for governor again as the more conservative Democrat against Carl Sanders, a wealthy businessman Carter mocked as “Cufflinks Carl.” Sanders never forgave him for anonymous, race-baiting flyers, which Carter disavowed. Ultimately, Carter won his races by attracting both Black voters and culturally conservative whites. Once in office, he was more direct. “I say to you quite frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over,” he declared in his 1971 inaugural address, setting a new standard for Southern governors that landed him on the cover of Time magazine. His statehouse initiatives included environmental protection, boosting rural education and overhauling antiquated executive branch structures. He proclaimed Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the slain civil rights leader’s home state. And he decided, as he received presidential candidates in 1972, that they were no more talented than he was. In 1974, he ran Democrats’ national campaign arm. Then he declared his own candidacy for 1976. An Atlanta newspaper responded with the headline: “Jimmy Who?” The Carters and a “Peanut Brigade” of family members and Georgia supporters camped out in Iowa and New Hampshire, establishing both states as presidential proving grounds. His first Senate endorsement: a young first-termer from Delaware named Joe Biden. Yet it was Carter’s ability to navigate America’s complex racial and rural politics that cemented the nomination. He swept the Deep South that November, the last Democrat to do so, as many white Southerners shifted to Republicans in response to civil rights initiatives. A self-declared “born-again Christian,” Carter drew snickers by referring to Scripture in a Playboy magazine interview, saying he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times.” The remarks gave Ford a new foothold and television comedians pounced — including NBC’s new “Saturday Night Live” show. But voters weary of cynicism in politics found it endearing. Carter chose Minnesota Sen. Walter “Fritz” Mondale as his running mate on a “Grits and Fritz” ticket. In office, he elevated the vice presidency and the first lady’s office. Mondale’s governing partnership was a model for influential successors Al Gore, Dick Cheney and Biden. Rosalynn Carter was one of the most involved presidential spouses in history, welcomed into Cabinet meetings and huddles with lawmakers and top aides. The Carters presided with uncommon informality: He used his nickname “Jimmy” even when taking the oath of office, carried his own luggage and tried to silence the Marine Band’s “Hail to the Chief.” They bought their clothes off the rack. Carter wore a cardigan for a White House address, urging Americans to conserve energy by turning down their thermostats. Amy, the youngest of four children, attended District of Columbia public school. Washington’s social and media elite scorned their style. But the larger concern was that “he hated politics,” according to Eizenstat, leaving him nowhere to turn politically once economic turmoil and foreign policy challenges took their toll. Carter partially deregulated the airline, railroad and trucking industries and established the departments of Education and Energy, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He designated millions of acres of Alaska as national parks or wildlife refuges. He appointed a then-record number of women and nonwhite people to federal posts. He never had a Supreme Court nomination, but he elevated civil rights attorney Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the nation’s second highest court, positioning her for a promotion in 1993. He appointed Paul Volker, the Federal Reserve chairman whose policies would help the economy boom in the 1980s — after Carter left office. He built on Nixon’s opening with China, and though he tolerated autocrats in Asia, pushed Latin America from dictatorships to democracy. But he couldn’t immediately tame inflation or the related energy crisis. And then came Iran. After he admitted the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979 by followers of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Negotiations to free the hostages broke down repeatedly ahead of the failed rescue attempt. The same year, Carter signed SALT II, the new strategic arms treaty with Leonid Brezhnev of the Soviet Union, only to pull it back, impose trade sanctions and order a U.S. boycott of the Moscow Olympics after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. Hoping to instill optimism, he delivered what the media dubbed his “malaise” speech, although he didn’t use that word. He declared the nation was suffering “a crisis of confidence.” By then, many Americans had lost confidence in the president, not themselves. Carter campaigned sparingly for reelection because of the hostage crisis, instead sending Rosalynn as Sen. Edward M. Kennedy challenged him for the Democratic nomination. Carter famously said he’d “kick his ass,” but was hobbled by Kennedy as Reagan rallied a broad coalition with “make America great again” appeals and asking voters whether they were “better off than you were four years ago.” Reagan further capitalized on Carter’s lecturing tone, eviscerating him in their lone fall debate with the quip: “There you go again.” Carter lost all but six states and Republicans rolled to a new Senate majority. Carter successfully negotiated the hostages’ freedom after the election, but in one final, bitter turn of events, Tehran waited until hours after Carter left office to let them walk free. Jimmy Carter speaks on Feb. 3, 2016, at the House of Lords in London. At 56, Carter returned to Georgia with “no idea what I would do with the rest of my life.” Four decades after launching The Carter Center, he still talked of unfinished business. “I thought when we got into politics we would have resolved everything,” Carter told the AP in 2021. “But it’s turned out to be much more long-lasting and insidious than I had thought it was. I think in general, the world itself is much more divided than in previous years.” Still, he affirmed what he said when he underwent treatment for a cancer diagnosis in his 10th decade of life. “I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he said in 2015 . “I’ve had a wonderful life. I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.”
