A series of petroglyphs have been identified in the Alpine Lombardy region at over 3,000 meters (9842 feet), more than 7 years after they were found by a hiker from Como. Found on Pizzo Tresero (Valfurva) within the Stelvio National Park, the strange carvings were at the foot of the glacier of the same name. Radiocarbon dating and analysis pointed too the petroglyphs dating to the Middle Bronze Age, between 3,600 and 3,200 years ago. The location is currently a historical hotspot, as another paleontological find has just been reported in the same vicinity - a fossilized ecosystem dating back 280 million years, from the Paleozoic era, in the Orobie Valtellinesi Park! “15,000-year-old” Gobi Desert Petroglyphs Made By Ancient Turks? Exceptional news that assumes a particularly significant scientific and historical value and that make these Lombard mountains even more at the center of interest not only for fans of the subject, but more generally for all those who will go to Valtellina to visit them.” Located at the Gavia Pass, the Tresero petroglyphs possess a unique technique, made over different periods – pointing to sustained human occupation amongst the ancient communities of the region. The heavy wear and tear of glacial activity likely caused significant erosion for a lot of the petroglyphs, leaving us with a much-reduced number in the present day. LBV Magazine reports that the Tresero petroglyphs formed a likely rock sanctuary, similar to Monte Bego in the Maritime Alps, though at a higher altitude. They’ve identified Stelvio National Park and the Alta Val de Gavia area as key enclaves for understanding early human interaction with the mountains of Europe . A new research project is set to be launched soon, extensively focused on better understanding ancient communities and the regions they inhabited, the relationship with resources from the area, and the change in the relationship with the environment over the centuries. (Photo provided free of charge by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the provinces of Como, Lecco, Monza and Brianza, Pavia, Sondrio and Varese. / Regione Lombardia ) Petroglyphs: Meaning and Cultural Significance These petroglyphs contain human figures resembling praying figures with arms raised towards the sky, a spiral carved into the rock, depictions of animals and other geometric figures, whose meaning or representation cannot be taken literally – perhaps they represented topographical markings? Petroglyphs are images created by removing parts of rock through incising, carving, picking, or abrading, seen also as a form of rock art . Though generally associated with prehistoric people, particularly from indigenous America some 20,000 years ago, the current finds are much newer and understood from a different material context. They’re generally associated with deep cultural and religious significance. There are other famous petroglyphs from Europe, but the current find in Lombardy will feature high up on this list. One of the most famous sites in Italy is the Val Camonica, featuring over 140,000 carvings dating from the Neolithic to the Iron Age (around 8000 BC to 1000 BC). The engravings depict animals, humans, hunting scenes, and geometric shapes. In northern Europe, the Alta Rock Art in Norway (4200 BC to 500 BC) contains carvings of reindeer, moose, fish, and human figures engaged in hunting and ritual activities. What? Why? Why now? Will it be reversed? These were some of wild screams that were heard in social media as everyone tried to figure out the reasons behind the decision of music legend A R Rahman and his wife Saira Banu to part ways after 29 years of togetherness. Though the news came to public notice through social media, the manner in which social media dealt with it, dissecting the life of the couple, much to the vicarious pleasure (should it not be grief) of the consumers, was intriguing. Of course, in a culture that celebrates ostentatious weddings for days by moving from one venue to another across the continents, divorces, too, will get some traction, naturally. Yet the manner in which all sorts of people were seen expressing their views and judging the people concerned with the split was, to put it mildly, vulgar. Breaking into a spiel over what he saw as a tragedy, a grieving presenter turned sarcastic against the lawyer, Vandana Shah, who made the revelation that not all was well with Rahman and his wife. The suggestion was that it was the lawyer who was orchestrating the break up and that she was specializing in the art of separating couples. Well, anyone will know that the lawyer lives and practices in Mumbai and it was Saira Banu who would have approached her with the ‘problem.’ But without an iota of knowledge on the ‘problem’ the random guy suggests that it was not the way to get it solved. That guy, who blamed it all on the lawyer, however, was kind hearted for he wanted the couple to reverse their decision unlike the countless others who were just pointing fingers. Watching the plethora of YouTube channels having nothing but the divorce story, spiced with speculations, hearsays and personal prejudices to run for days, I wondered if we, as a society, should be so obsessed with a celebrity’s personal life. True, we have a long tradition of peeping into the lives of achievers, artistes, rich, powerful and successful people for a variety of reasons. While the predominant reason being the proxy gratification, there are other excuses like such stories being aspirational. But dwelling over a purely personal matter like divorce at such lengths with no regard for facts and truth is a sad commentary on the prevailing pattern of news dissemination and consumption. Another nightmare of stardom that came to light in the latest episode that has gained the contours of a controversy is that haters and detractors enjoy bludgeoning a celebrity with unrelated cudgels when they are already bogged down by a personal problem. To put it otherwise, Rahman’s earlier averments in various public forums expressing his love for Tamil is now being mocked at by some who have suddenly discovered that his wife is a Gujarati who does not speak Tamil. An old image of ‘Tamilanangu’ (Tamil goddess or angel) that Rahman shared to show his commitment to the Tamil cause when another controversy, stoked by Union Home Minister Amit Shah by calling people to speak in Hindi, was raging in the State was circulated with an obscene intent. That visual of the imaginary Tamilanangu – a dark woman dancing with her slightly curly thick tresses left open and holding a spear with the Tamil alphabet Zha on the top – was shared by Rahman on his Twitter page in 2022 and it went viral with several thousands of people retweeting it. Now that Tamilanagu image is juxtaposed with a photo of Mohini Dey, a bass guitarist in Rahman’s musical troupe who leaves her curly long locks loose. What those people want to convey through the juxtaposed images is that Tamilangu was inspired by Mohini Dey. Poor guys, they found out that Mohini Dey and husband Mark Hartsuch, a saxophone player hailing from the US, came out with a joint declaration that they were splitting, the day after Rahman’s separation was announced by his wife. So, the gossip brigade put the two different announcements together to come up with the thesis that Mohini Dey was the reason for Rahman’s split, triggering a fusillade of abuses and allegations against the bassist and suggesting that Rahman liked the Tamilanagu image because it resembled Mohini Dey. But advocate Vandana Shah had said ‘no’ when asked if Mohini Dey had anything to do with Saira Banu’s decision to divorce Rahman, which has left those looking for the reason for the split in square one. Only the self-styled ‘know-all’ loudmouths appearing on social media and the mainstream media channels to discuss everything under the sun pretend to have some clue on the divorce and are yapping about it, giving different reasons and blaming either Rahman or Saira Banu. Whatever be the truth behind it, we know that only a few people are privy to it and they are not going to reveal it. So it is better we keep our curiosity aside and keep quiet. Other than wishing the couple all the best – whether they go their own ways or kiss and make up by responding to the initiatives of close friends and family members who are said to be working on a patch up – admirers and fans of Rahman should not bother about what happens next. It is something strictly private between Rahman and Saira Banu. Let’s allow them to deal with it and refrain from muckraking.Shop smarter, not harder: How AI tools can make shopping easier

Festival of Lights begins tomorrow to celebrate HanukkahWoman Says She Refuses to Contribute to Family Christmas Gift After Finding Out It Was Going to Her Brother. Here’s WhyEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Drew Lock is likely going to start at quarterback for the New York Giants against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday when they try to end a franchise-record 10-game losing streak. Lock started against Atlanta last weekend and his status became an issue after the 34-7 loss when coach Brian Daboll said the 28-year-old was having an issue with his right shoulder. An MRI was done Monday and Daboll announced Tuesday that Lock would be his starter if he stayed healthy. “It came back good so rocking and rolling,” Lock said, noting he was hurt on a third down pass to Daniel Bellinger in the first quarter when Falcons linebacker Matthew Judon pulled his arm on the play. He finished the game. There were questions whether Daboll would switch back to Tommy DeVito after Lock threw two pick-6s and lost a fumble on a strip-sack against the Falcons. Lock has had three interceptions returned for scores in three starts this season, including two on tipped passes. Daboll said it was important to give Lock a couple of starts in which he was able to get all the reps in practice. “Knowing what we did the week before, take the things we need to get better at into this week and actually be able to go out there and do it is something I’m looking forward to,” Lock said. “Similar cadences with the guys, being in the huddle together. I think it can only be a positive for such a roller coaster out of that spot.” The one thing that might change this week is the Giants center. John Michael Schmitz has an ankle injury and he did not practice Tuesday. He left the locker room with a boot on his right foot. New York has moved veteran guard Greg Van Roten to center when Schmitz was hurt and Lock also worked with guard Austin Schlottmann as his center while playing in Denver. “I’m pretty familiar with all the guys that are rotating in there,” Lock said. The Giants have the NFL's worst scoring offense, averaging 14.3 points. They benched Daniel Jones coming out of their bye week and days later released him after he requested it. DeVito has started two games and Lock three since Jones was released. New York has scored 59 points in those games, with 20 coming against Dallas in a seven-point loss on Thanksgiving. Running back Tyrone Tracy (ankle), wide receiver Malik Nabers (knee-foot), cornerback Greg Stroman (shoulder-shin), defensive tackle Cory Durden (shoulder), inside linebacker Micah McFadden (neck) and cornerback Dru Phillips (shoulder) also did not practice on Tuesday, which is usually a day off. The team will have off on Christmas Day and return to practice on Thursday. The Giants opened practice on Tuesday with the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” blaring on the loudspeakers in their indoor practice facility. Jones, who is on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, sent the Giants offensive linemen Christmas gifts. “DJ comes in, saves me and Tommy once again, and then takes care of the guys,” Lock said. “I expected nothing less from the guy. That’s just who he is, and cares about these guys still.” ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl Tom Canavan, The Associated Press

TWIN FALLS — Is In-N-Out Burger moving in? It sounds as if management of Outback Steakhouse would prefer the fast-food chain to back off. Could we be seeing a faceoff between burgers and Bloomin’ Onions? The City Council hears In-N-Out development manager Todd Smith out during an appeal for In-N-Out Burger’s drive-through and hours request Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, at City Hall in Twin Falls. The manager and an executive of a restaurant company that owns and operates Outbacks in the Pacific Northwest, including the Twin Falls location, say they have been providing its Australian-themed fare in Twin Falls for 23 years and don’t intend on moving from its location along Blue Lakes Boulevard North where In-N-Out officials say they plan to open its first restaurant in south-central Idaho. The situation, at the very least, sounds odd, but Brad Barker, regional vice president of Evergreen Restaurant Group, a franchisee of Outback, held firm that he is not aware of any deal between Outback Steakhouse and In-N-Out, which filed a building permit this month for the location. “We are also puzzled as to why the city would consider a building permit for In-N-Out burger when they are not the owner or the current lessee of the property,” Barker wrote to the Times-News . A notice for a zoning request is seen outside Outback Steakhouse in June 2024. The site is a proposed location for In-N-Out Burger. Barker said Outback has the lease agreement through 2028 and an option to renew for additional years after that — "so we're not going anywhere." A report from the Twin Falls County Assessors Office shows there was activity on the property in March, with the transfer of a special warranty deed to Canyon Park West LLC, tied to Wood Investments Co. in Newport Beach, California. Todd Smith, In-N-Out development manager, approached the city’s planning and zoning commission in June, where his request for a drive-thru was denied but later approved in September. The hearings came with signs posted around the Outback property notifying the public about the request. Whatever In-N-Out’s plans are, “We cannot comment on what In-N-Out Burger is or is not doing,” Barker said. Patrick Wood, owner of Wood Investments Co., wasn't available for comment on Friday. Mike Abbate, In-N-Out Burgers' vice president of store development, didn’t directly address the situation with Outback in an emailed reply Thursday, but he did mention the address on which Outback now stands. “We’re currently in the pre-development stage of our approved project located at 1965 Blue Lakes Boulevard in Twin Falls, Idaho and there’s still quite a bit of work to be done before we can begin construction,” Abbate wrote. Abbate, who didn't offer a projected opening date, said once ground is broken, it will take eight to nine months to build a restaurant and open it for business. Slocum said business has been affected because customers think Outback is closed. It’s not, and it remains open from noon to 9 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. He said customers often pepper him with questions about the restaurant’s status. Some posters on social media said they assume Outback would find a different location upon In-N-Out coming in. Thirteen weeks ago, someone posted on Outback’s local Facebook page, questioning about the restaurant’s status. The question, posted in September, went unanswered and there hasn’t been another post made by the restaurant or customers since then. Eric Goodell reports for the Times-News . Insider Selling: Service Co. International (NYSE:SCI) VP Sells 56,100 Shares of StockLAS VEGAS — Boise State advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West women's volleyball tournament by defeating Utah State on Wednesday night, but the Broncos did not immediately say whether they would play Friday against San Jose State. San Jose State, which received six forfeit victories because of boycotts from Mountain West opponents, is seeded second in the conference tournament and received a first-round bye. No. 6 seed Boise State forfeited both of its regular-season matches to the Spartans. “No decision's been made,” Boise State spokesman Doug Link said. “I don't know what's going to go on. I think we're playing, but at this time there's nothing more to say.” Link said Broncos coach Shawn Garus would only speak to the media about the 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-23 victory over the third-seeded Aggies. Players were not made available to comment. Get stories, photos and videos about your favorite New York teams in your inbox every morning. By clicking Sign up, you agree to our privacy policy . Link said he didn't know if the decision on whether to play would occur Wednesday night or what would go into it, whether it would be a team vote or more of a university decision. Should San Jose State play and defeat Boise State or advance through another forfeit, the Spartans would face top-seeded Colorado State or No. 5 San Diego State in Saturday’s championship. Both teams played the Spartans this season. Credit: AP/Eakin Howard San Jose State coach Todd Kress scouted the Boise State-Utah State match, but he was not made available for comment. The Spartans' athletic department later released a statement that read: “Our team is excited and prepared to take the court on Friday night in the semifinals.” Mountain West members Boise State, Wyoming, Utah State and Nevada as well as Southern Utah canceled games this season against the Spartans. Nevada’s players stated they “refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes,” without providing further details. A lawsuit was recently filed in Colorado by players from various schools against the conference and San Jose State officials calling for a Spartans player not to be allowed participation in the tournament, citing unspecified reports asserting there was a transgender player on the San Jose State volleyball team, even naming her. The San Jose State Spartans logo is seen on the net against the Air Force Falcons during the third set of an NCAA college volleyball match Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, in San Jose, Calif. Credit: AP/Eakin Howard U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver ruled Monday that the player is allowed to play, and a federal appeals court upheld the decision the following day. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans women’s volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not publicly commented on her gender identity and through school officials has declined an interview request. Wyoming and Nevada did not qualify for the tournament. Participation of transgender women in women’s sports is apparently why the five teams canceled their games against San Jose State, and the topic became a hot political topic ahead of the recent election.Survey reveals $270K salary seen as key to financial success in the US, but many fall short

McClain's 14 lead Texas Southern over Texas A&M-Kingsville 80-72Jason Aldean told Fox News Digital that he has no problem speaking his mind when it comes to "things I believe in." Country music star Jason Aldean ‘s wife, Brittany Aldean, is blaming "woke" politics for why her husband was left off Billboard Magazine's "100 Greatest Country Artists of All Time" list this week. Billboard published its staff-selected list this week of the 100 best country artists spanning over the past 100 years. The list drew criticism on social media from some country music fans, who complained about the magazine including artists who have left country music, like Maren Morris, but snubbing Aldean, who has sold over 20 million albums and had over two dozen #1 singles over his career. "Despite holding the crown as the reigning ACM Artist of the Decade with 28 number one hits in his back pocket, Jason Aldean was somehow not listed as one of Billboard’s 100 Greatest Country Artists of All-Time," social media account, the Country Music Wire , reported. Aldean's wife Brittany shared the social media post to her Instagram stories and suggested Billboard didn't like her husband's conservative political beliefs. BRITTANY ALDEAN SAYS TRUMP WILL DO ‘GREAT THINGS’ FOR AMERICA, ‘TIDE IS TURNING’ Brittany Aldean accused Billboard Magazine of "wokeness" for leaving her husband, Jason Aldean, off of its 100 Greatest Country Artists list. (Steve Granitz) "Remember when I said it's been a journey standing up for what we believe in??" she wrote. "This is a prime example of Jason being left out of things in the industry."[Billboard] your wokeness obviously overrides your ability to give credit where it's due, and it's sad," her post continued. The "Try That in a Small Town" singer and his wife have been outspoken supporters of President-elect Donald Trump over the years, and were spotted sitting next to Trump on the fourth night of the Republican National Convention this past July. Two of Aldean's bandmates, bassist Tully Kennedy and guitarist Kurt Allison, also suggested the magazine's snub was influenced by politics. "It ain’t always easy standing up for what you believe in," Kennedy wrote in an Instagram post . "I don’t know whats funnier @billboard .. How ridiculous this makes you look or the fact that you think it would bother us. Thx for making that chip on our shoulder just a little bit bigger. Jason Aldean also responded in a comment under Allison's post. "This shouldn’t come as a shock. And people ask if we still have a chip on our shoulder and feel like we have something to prove???" he posted with a laughing emoji. "Hell yea we do and this is a prime example why!! We’ll just keep hammerin and do what we do. Same as we always have," he posted with a fist bump emoji. Billboard did not return Fox News Digital's request for comment. (Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images) The magazine's editors explained in the article that commercial success was not the only factor that influenced their choices. "While commercial success was a factor, artistry, longevity and enduring influence counted just as much. Because it’s too early to gauge the long-term impact of many of the newer acts yet, the list leans largely on artists whose place in country music history is already secure," the article said. The Aldeans said recently that they do not regret their vocal support for Trump, despite the backlash they've faced over the years. "We've taken a lot of heat from the entertainment industry and the media for our support of @realDonaldTrump," Jason Aldean wrote in a November 5 social media post. "As a father and an American citizen, I want to see our country get back to its values and principles that made us great to begin with. Vote so our kids can have a safe and secure future. BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping returned to Beijing on Saturday morning after attending the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the 19th G20 Summit and paying state visits to Peru and Brazil, which was hailed as a journey of friendship, unity and cooperation with pioneering significance by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when briefing the accompanying journalists at the end of the trip. During the 11-day trip from November 13 to 23, 2024, President Xi attended nearly 40 bilateral and multilateral events. More than 60 cooperation documents were reached. It not only promoted the healthy and stable development of major-country relations, but also led the Global South to unite and strengthen itself, Wang said. The trip also enriched new practices of building a community with a shared future for mankind and broke new ground in major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, Wang noted. Over the past 35 years, APEC has fueled rapid regional development, establishing the Asia-Pacific as the most dynamic sector for the global economy, Wang said. President Xi attended the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting on November 16 in Lima, Peru, and proposed upholding a universally beneficial, inclusive vision for Asia-Pacific development. With the joint efforts of all parties, a new document was adopted to guide the process of building a free trade area in the Asia-Pacific region at the meeting, which gives new impetus to our efforts toward an open Asia-Pacific economy, Wang said. China has always been an active promoter and leader of Asia-Pacific regional cooperation. China will continue to join hands with regional partners, adhere to true multilateralism and open regionalism, and jointly usher in another 30 golden years of development for the region, Wang said. In the face of global changes of the century, the Global South is growing with a strong momentum while the global governance system lags behind changes taking place in the international balance of power. Issues like a widening North-South gap, digital divide have not been effectively addressed. The 19th G20 Summit this year has chosen the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” and decides to establish a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which reflects the Global South’s desire to achieve development and prosperity and the pursuit of modernization, Wang said. China’s successful experience in poverty alleviation has been noted by President Xi at the meeting based on his personal experience, pointing out that China’s story is proof that developing countries can eliminate poverty, when there is the endurance, perseverance and striving spirit. If China can make it, other developing countries can make it too. This is what China’s battle against poverty says to the world. President Xi stressed at the meeting that China will always be a member of the Global South, a doer and go-getter working for the cause of global development. China will go hand in hand with countries from the Global South to push forward the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction, Wang noted. Join our Tyee Builder drive and sign up by Dec. 31. And over the past year, it feels like things have hit a boiling point . I work as a senior editor at an online LGBTQ2S+ magazine. As someone with a very online job that demands I keep up with the news cycle , the onslaught of heaviness in 2024 has massively increased my desire — or, frankly, need — for counter-programming wherever possible. Nearly every night for the past year, I’ve done what my partner calls my “onlines.” While she nobly reads a book — her brain strong and more ridged than mine — I plug my headphones into my smooth brain for one to two hours of nightly TikTok content. My hand cramps from propping my phone up on my chest, swiping and swiping and swiping until I finally turn it off and spend another hour of blue-light-fuelled sleep avoidance thinking about all the cat videos and recipes and memes I just absorbed in a dissociative state. Sound familiar? I’m certainly not alone in my thirst for mind-numbing dissociation amidst a strenuous news cycle. And it turns out there’s a word for all of that. Earlier this month, the Oxford English Dictionary declared “brain rot” as its word of the year, an annual accolade that doesn’t mean all that much beyond capturing the mood of a populace at a certain time in history. And this year, right now? That mood is tired . ‘The argot of a generation’ The Oxford English Dictionary specifically defines brain rot as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration.” The New Yorker’s Jessica Winter called it “a strikingly capacious term, enfolding the psychological and cognitive decay wrought by screen addiction, the bacteria-like content that feeds the addiction, and the argot of a generation for whom much of this content is made.” And there’s science to back it all up: a group of psychologists at Stanford University concluded back in 2018 that people who frequently multi-task with multiple online platforms — say, scrolling TikTok on my phone while checking emails on my laptop while watching Below Deck on the TV — have reduced our memory and attention spans. Brain rot is both the symptom and the solution to a need to escape from the darkness of the real world. During an appearance on CBC’s Commotion podcast earlier this month, I partook in a game of “brain rot or not?” where host Elamin Abdelmahmoud presented me and other panellists with a variety of sounds, ranging from the “Subway Surfers” music to the scrumptiously satisfying crunch of one of those big hydraulic presses crushing something. To add to those examples: that elderly Persian cat named Gizmo I follow on TikTok? He both gives me, and is in and of himself, brain rot. Same goes for the dozen seasons of Top Chef I’ve watched since the U.S. presidential election. Even my partner, pious in her nightly library reading, indulges in her own flavour of brain rot through her obsession with “panning” content — a genre of Instagram influencer girlie who posts obsessively over “hitting pan” (also known as the act of finishing a skin care, makeup or personal product — you know, when you hit that bottom of your eyeshadow palette). I once asked why she cares so much about it. “I just like it” was her answer. RELATED STORIES Young People Turn to TikTok for News. What Do They Get? And while I can’t blame it entirely on my nightly content dump, I do feel... slower than I did a year ago. And my nightly habits might even be shortening my lifespan, as one 2023 study suggests . Aspirationally, I’d love to spend my time reading important works, learning new things, crafting or creating stuff. And yet, like clockwork, there I am every night with my screen and my scrolling. Internet garbage is hardly a new phenomenon. But there’s something behind the Oxford English Dictionary choosing this word now, to capture the place we are at now. Has being online become more isolating? As 2024 comes to a close, we’re in the midst of a great social media shift. The re-election of Donald Trump has quickly degraded the social media platform X, long a networking and news gathering space for millions of people, into a much darker place (a process already started by Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform last year). Meta, meanwhile, has banned Canadian news from Facebook and Instagram. Even TikTok has seen a partial ban in the United States, further fracturing our online gathering spaces. In many ways, being online has become more isolated, even as we seek out alternatives. My thriving community on X hasn’t all made its way over to Bluesky like I have, and I’ve lost people who’ve been my mutuals for years. At 29, I am of a cohort that came of age along with the internet. I was on the Neopets text-based role-playing forums in middle school. I wrote Twilight fan fiction in high school. I had a very successful fan Tumblr blog devoted to the Canadian sci-fi TV series Orphan Black when I was in university. And I’ve relied on networking platforms like the website formerly known as Twitter to advance my career since graduating. I’ve seen many people over 30 balk at the idea that something like “skibidi toilet” would go viral in 2024, but it doesn’t feel all that different from “ Charlie the Unicorn ,” a staple of 2005 middle-school internet. The idea that internet garbage as brain rot is a new phenomenon in 2024 is small-minded at best. But the platforms where we consume it, and the world around us, make it a decidedly different beast this year of all years — even compared with some obviously challenging recent periods. Take 2020, a year where, by health protocol necessity, our existences became moved even further online. Much of that year was experienced through a screen for many of us, and we took solace in much of the content that falls under the “brain rot” designation. I played a lot of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and watched a lot of bad reality TV in those dark pandemic months. But the difference back then was that we were all in it together. In 2020, I actually found myself connecting even more with friends in other cities, as we visited each other’s Animal Crossing islands. My now-fiancée, who was a friend at the time, and I connected over Zoom, before gradually meeting six feet apart in New Brighton Park for pandemic-era dates. Collective games like Among Us and Jackbox surged in popularity, as friends worked to stay in better connection. Maybe I look back with a degree of rose-coloured hindsight, but being online in 2020 didn’t feel rotted in the way 2024 has felt rotted. It felt nourishing and growing and life-sustaining during a really hard time. But this year, I both dread and long for every moment I open my phone — a feeling I attribute to both the news I know I’ll see, and the content sludge I’ll consume to get through it. In all honesty, my favourite online space in 2024 wasn’t in my nightly content dump from these big social media networks, but the small Discord server my partner and I made with some friends last year to share memes and recipes and make movie night plans together. Just two dozen of my real-life connections, coming together in a shared online space. No strangers. No Nazis. No egotistical billionaires. Young People Turn to TikTok for News. What Do They Get? read more It reminds me of that collective deep pandemic feeling, where the internet is an avenue to build and strengthen connections, rather than create rifts and rot. Call it 2024’s version of an Animal Crossing island. I think that in order to fight the continued rot, we need to find more of those spaces where we can. Places where we can talk amongst ourselves and really reconnect with the “network” side of social networking again. The endless scroll of brain rot might feel good in the short term, and I’m not suggesting we all quit cold turkey. But find those spaces with real humans to talk about the rot you love, rather than rotting alone. Take those memes to the group chat; make a channel to talk about the latest episode of Doctor Odyssey . Let’s find ways to rot together, because that’s so much better than rotting alone.
