Rogers State University plans to construct a new, modernized building for its science and technology programs. Steve Valencia, RSU's vice president for development, said the state has given $10 million and the Cherokee Nation $4 million for the proposed Center for Science and Technology. The university can also bond up to $12 million for the project. Valencia said RSU is relying on private donors to shore up the remaining $4 million. "This is a $30 million project," Valencia said. "We'll build as much building as we can for $30 million, but if we fall short in our fundraising ... it will be a setback. It is critically important that we meet the goal." RSU invited the community to the Dr. Carolyn Taylor Center Wednesday for a kick-off event to raise awareness of the fundraiser. There, RSU Foundation Chair Misty Choat announced the foundation would match up to $1 million in private donations. "This means that your gift will have double the impact," Choat said. RSU plans to break ground on the STEM center by the end of next summer, Valencia said. The STEM center will go up in what is now the parking lot west of Loshbaugh Hall and south of the Stratton Taylor Library. He said the university will soon begin negotiations with an architectural firm to put together designs for the center. A different architectural firm has drafted concept art, Valencia said, but this art doesn't reflect how the final design will look. The university's science and technology programs currently occupy Loshbaugh Hall, built in 1955 when the school on the hill was the Oklahoma Military Academy. Valencia said RSU determined renovating Loshbaugh would cost more than constructing a brand-new building. "It was never big enough to accommodate Rogers State University and certainly doesn't have the modern amenities that science labs need today," Valencia said. Alyssa Allen, a senior studying molecular biology at RSU, said Loshbaugh lacks natural gas, so students have to use inferior hot plates or lighters to generate heat for experiments. She said there are often more broken microscopes in the microbiology lab than functioning ones, and much of the equipment students use is older than they are. "The routine of equipment not working or being dated from the last century has become the butt of the joke for laboratories in Loshbaugh," Allen said. "Students and professors alike do not deserve this imbalance of superior teaching with inferior lab equipment and antiquated facilities." Mark Rasor, the university's interim president, said accrediting officials told RSU leaders if the university wasn't planning to build a new STEM building, they would have determined RSU's facilities to be inadequate. "That's a huge one, because that means that we could easily lose accreditation," Rasor said. Valencia said RSU will keep Loshbaugh for faculty offices and rooms for classes that don't require sophisticated equipment. He said parents and students tend to equate quality of education with the quality of a school's facilities, and he figured most high schools in the area have nicer science labs than RSU. A better science building, Valencia said, would allow the university to accurately reflect the quality of its professors and programs. "We really have a beautiful, modern campus, until you get to Loshbaugh," Valencia said. "...It hurts us in our ability to recruit. This new facility, obviously, will be a very attractive and functional space, and it will help with with recruiting." Meggie Froman-Knight, executive director of Claremore Economic Development, said the center would equip future generations to receive world-class science and technology education at home in Rogers County. She said the center would attract and retain high-quality job opportunities in northeast Oklahoma. "Careers will be launched here," Froman-Knight said. "Groundbreaking ideas will take shape within the walls of this center ... It's a promise to provide the skills and education needed to succeed in an ever-evolving global economy." CHILLIWACK, B.C. — Dan Coulter, a former member of British Columbia's legislature and a New Democrat cabinet minister, has died at age 49. The BC New Democratic Party says in a statement that Coulter was a "devoted advocate" for the people of B.C. The party says Coulter "always championed the underdog," citing his work in the legislature after his election in Chilliwack in 2020, his former role of chair of the Chilliwack school board and as the Parliamentary secretary for accessibility and minister of state for infrastructure and transit. The party's provincial director Heather Stoutenburg said last week in a statement that Coulter had "experienced a serious medical emergency" and was being treated in hospital. The party says a private service will be held for Coulter on Saturday and a local public service will be held in Chilliwack on Jan. 11. The party says that Coulter, who lost his bid for re-election in the October provincial election, was "the very best of us," and it extends its "deepest condolences to his family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him." It says that instead of flowers, his family has asked that donations go to the Chilliwack Restorative Justice and Youth Advocacy Association, Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society, and the BC SPCA. "To those of us who knew him, Dan was so much more than a colleague — he was a friend and a mentor," the statement says. "He was smart, funny, thoughtful and honest. But above all things, he was kind." Premier David Eby is echoing that sentiment on social media, saying the province has lost an "incredible advocate and a fighter for justice." "For comparison, two large eggs contain one third gram of tryptophan, which is already more than what you'd get from a single serving of turkey breast," Yeung says. How Much Turkey Would It Take to Make You Tired? Research published in the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience found that a full gram of tryptophan may help those with mild insomnia and a long sleep latency fall asleep faster. A single serving of turkey, however, only contains a fourth of this amount. Building off of this study, it'd take quite a bit of turkey to actually make you tired. "To get that amount, you'd need to eat a minimum of about 1.33 pounds of cooked turkey breast," Yeung explains. "Even then, when tryptophan is consumed as part of food, your body uses it for various functions, which weakens its impact on promoting sleep. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says its investigation into the Leduc-based Mountie revealed evidence that gives reason to believe sexual assault offences happened and that the officer should be charged. It says they allegedly took place in an Airdrie hotel room while a group of people socialized in the early morning hours of Dec. 3, 2022. Const. Bridget Morla is charged with two counts of sexual assault. She has been released on the condition that she appear in court next week. As the video game industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, Thursday’s Game Awards took a decidedly inward turn after years of letting Hollywood in. TGA has always stood out for how much it doesn’t emulate the entertainment industry’s topline awards shows, allowing the public to vote on its categories and chucking traditional commercial blocks for gaming announcements and trailers. Yet Hollywood has always flocked to it, with Game Awards organizers consistently signing big actors and filmmakers to promote films and TV shows — often at the expense of time devoted to the show’s actual winners. On one hand, the global livestream’s ever-increasing viewership of more than 100 million makes it a bonanza for those in any media industry seeking easy promotion, which keeps the ceremony well funded. The 2023 show saw the likes of Matthew McConaughey and Timothée Chalamet grace the stage as presenters, with the latter doing so on the verge of Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” hitting theaters. But last year’s bombardment of actors struck a sour note with the video game industry, which saw the show as undercutting awards recipients during an increasingly challenging time for the industry. The 2023 Game Awards capped a year that saw a sharp uptick in industry layoffs, which worsened significantly in 2024. Video gaming has lost just under 15,000 jobs this year, the latest cuts of which came from Warner Bros. Montreal on Thursday. WB Montreal worked on February’s “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” a costly flop that WB Games stopped supporting with new content earlier this week. Accepting an award for best VR/AR game, “Batman: Arkham Shadow” publisher Oculus Studios made it a point to shout out both “Suicide Squad” studios, which worked on previous “Arkham” games. Industry layoffs were further addressed through Amir Satvat, who accepted the inaugural Game Changer honor for helping beleaguered workers find new jobs. Swen Vincke, whose Larian Studios won game of the year in 2023 for “Baldur’s Gate 3,” also acknowledged the difficulties the industry is facing when he presented the game of the year award, which went to Sony’s “Astro Bot.” While poking fun at how his prior acceptance speech was cut short in the last ceremony, Vincke criticized publishers for prioritizing sales targets over creativity and games people want to play, playfully citing his grievances as coming from an “oracle” he spoke to. As much as “Astro Bot” legitimized Sony’s strength in games, winning four awards in total, PlayStation’s year was still soured by “Concord,” a pricey live service that debuted to very poor engagement in August before it was permanently shuttered less than two weeks later. As for the arenas of Hollywood that were part of the 2024 Game Awards, they were all gaming adjacent. Harrison Ford presented an award early in the show but was there to support “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” a Bethesda release that bowed Tuesday, having granted his likeness to Troy Baker’s voice performance . Aaron Paul, of “Breaking Bad” fame, also showed up to reveal a trailer for “Dispatch,” a new game he lent his voice to, alongside prominent voice actor Laura Bailey. Netflix constituted the sole big push from the Hollywood side, teasing the upcoming second season of “Squid Game,” but even that was secondary to “ Squid Game: Unleashed ,” the streamer’s own gaming take on its biggest series. “Unleashed” is out this Tuesday and will be free for non-subscribers for a limited time in the run-up to the show’s second season, which streams Dec. 26. Likewise, a reveal trailer for video game “Game of Thrones: Kingsroad” was shown, but there was no subsequent promotion of HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the next “Game of Thrones” prequel series, due in 2025. Beyond that, Amazon’s “Fallout” got some love, winning for best adaptation after becoming one of the year’s biggest streaming hits. Netflix’s “Arcane” was nominated for the same award, with music from the “League of Legends” adaptation comprising a performance from 21 Pilots.Kathleen “Butchie” Muscatell went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 19, 2024. She is reunited with the love of her life Tom, and their son Kim. She was born on April 21, 1932 in Mandan, ND. She split her time between Cotton Lake near Detroit Lakes, MN and Bradenton, FL. She was known for her warm hospitality, always welcoming friends and family into her home. Never one to meet a stranger, she kept her candy drawer stocked with sweet treats, eager to share with all who stopped by. Butchie dedicated much of her life to volunteer work, and was an active member of several organizations. She was a proud member of The P.E.O. Sisterhood, Cotton Lake Pride and Joy Homemakers, president of the YWCA and the president of The Children’s Village Family Services. She is survived by her children: Brett (Gina), Ward (Debra), Kathy (Vann), and Marc. Butchie is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life. An avid sports fan, she favored the MN Vikings, always donning her purple and gold suit on game days. She and Tom missed very few NDSU Bison home football games. Butchie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her kindness, compassion, and ability to see the best in everyone will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
