It’s a daunting reality for Democrats: Republican Donald Trump's support has grown broadly since he last sought the presidency. In his defeat of Democrat Kamala Harris , Trump won a bigger percentage of the vote in each one of the 50 states, and Washington, D.C., than he did four years ago. He won more actual votes than in 2020 in 40 states, according to an Associated Press analysis. Certainly, Harris’ more than 7 million vote decline from President Joe Biden’s 2020 total was a factor in her loss, especially in swing-state metropolitan areas that have been the party’s winning electoral strongholds. But, despite national turnout that was lower than in the high-enthusiasm 2020 election, Trump received 2.5 million more votes than he did four years ago. He swept the seven most competitive states to win a convincing Electoral College victory, becoming the first Republican nominee in 20 years to win a majority of the popular vote. Trump cut into places where Harris needed to overperform to win a close election. Now Democrats are weighing how to regain traction ahead of the midterm elections in two years, when control of Congress will again be up for grabs and dozens of governors elected. There were some notable pieces to how Trump's victory came together: Though Trump improved across the map, his gains were particularly noteworthy in urban counties home to the cities of Detroit, Milwaukee and Philadelphia, electoral engines that stalled for Harris in industrial swing states Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Harris fell more than 50,000 votes — and 5 percentage points — short of Biden's total in Wayne County, Michigan, which makes up the lion's share of the Detroit metro area. She was almost 36,000 votes off Biden's mark in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, and about 1,000 short in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. It wasn't only Harris' shortfall that helped Trump carry the states, a trio that Democrats had collectively carried in six of the seven previous elections before Nov. 5. Trump added to his 2020 totals in all three metro counties, netting more than 24,000 votes in Wayne County, more than 11,000 in Philadelphia County and almost 4,000 in Milwaukee County. It’s not yet possible to determine whether Harris fell short of Biden’s performance because Biden voters stayed home or switched their vote to Trump — or how some combination of the two produced the rightward drift evident in each of these states. Harris advertised heavily and campaigned regularly in each, and made Milwaukee County her first stop as a candidate with a rally in July. These swings alone were not the difference in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, but her weaker performance than Biden across the three metros helped Trump, who held on to big 2020 margins in the three states' broad rural areas and improved or held steady in populous suburbs. Trump's team and outside groups supporting him knew from their data that he was making inroads with Black voters, particularly Black men younger than 50, more concentrated in these urban areas that have been key to Democratic victories. When James Blair, Trump's political director, saw results coming in from Philadelphia on election night, he knew Trump had cut into the more predominantly Black precincts, a gain that would echo in Wayne and Milwaukee counties. “The data made clear there was an opportunity there,” Blair said. AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 120,000 voters, found Trump won a larger share of Black and Latino voters than he did in 2020, and most notably among men under age 45. Democrats won Senate races in Michigan and Wisconsin but lost in Pennsylvania. In 2026, they will be defending governorships in all three states and a Senate seat in Michigan. Despite the burst of enthusiasm Harris' candidacy created among the Democratic base when she entered the race in July, she ended up receiving fewer votes than Biden in three of the seven states where she campaigned almost exclusively. In Arizona, she received about 90,000 fewer votes than Biden. She received about 67,000 fewer in Michigan and 39,000 fewer in Pennsylvania. In four others — Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin — Harris won more votes than Biden did. But Trump's support grew by more — in some states, significantly more. That dynamic is glaring in Georgia, where Harris received almost 73,000 more votes than Biden did when he very narrowly carried the state. But Trump added more than 200,000 to his 2020 total, en route to winning Georgia by roughly 2 percentage points. In Wisconsin, Trump's team reacted to slippage it saw in GOP-leaning counties in suburban Milwaukee by targeting once-Democratic-leaning, working-class areas, where Trump made notable gains. In the three largest suburban Milwaukee counties — Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha — which have formed the backbone of GOP victories for decades, Harris performed better than Biden did in 2020. She also gained more votes than Trump gained over 2020, though he still won the counties. That made Trump's focus on Rock County, a blue-collar area in south central Wisconsin, critical. Trump received 3,084 more votes in Rock County, home of the former automotive manufacturing city of Janesville, than he did in 2020, while Harris underperformed Biden's 2020 total by seven votes. That helped Trump offset Harris' improvement in Milwaukee's suburbs. The focus speaks to the strength Trump has had and continued to grow with middle-income, non-college educated voters, the Trump campaign's senior data analyst Tim Saler said. “If you're going to have to lean into working-class voters, they are particularly strong in Wisconsin,” Saler said. “We saw huge shifts from 2020 to 2024 in our favor.” Of the seven most competitive states, Arizona saw the smallest increase in the number of votes cast in the presidential contest — slightly more than 4,000 votes, in a state with more than 3.3 million ballots cast. That was despite nearly 30 campaign visits to Arizona by Trump, Harris and their running mates and more than $432 million spent on advertising by the campaigns and allied outside groups, according to the ad-monitoring firm AdImpact. Arizona, alone of the seven swing states, saw Harris fall short of Biden across small, midsize and large counties. In the other six states, she was able to hold on in at least one of these categories. Even more telling, it is also the only swing state where Trump improved his margin in every single county. While turnout in Maricopa County, Arizona's most populous as the home to Phoenix, dipped slightly from 2020 — by 14,199 votes, a tiny change in a county where more than 2 million people voted — Trump gained almost 56,000 more votes than four years ago. Meanwhile, Harris fell more than 60,000 votes short of Biden's total, contributing to a shift significant enough to swing the county and state to Trump, who lost Arizona by fewer than 11,000 votes in 2020. The biggest leaps to the right weren't taking place exclusively among Republican-leaning counties, but also among the most Democratic-leaning counties in the states. Michigan's Wayne County swung 9 points toward Trump, tying the more Republican-leaning Antrim County for the largest movement in the state. AP VoteCast found that voters were most likely to say the economy was the most important issue facing the country in 2024, followed by immigration. Trump supporters were more motivated by economic issues and immigration than Harris', the survey showed. “It’s still all about the economy," said North Carolina Democratic strategist Morgan Jackson, a senior adviser to Democrat Josh Stein, who won North Carolina’s governorship on Nov. 5 as Trump also carried the state. “Democrats have to embrace an economic message that actually works for real people and talk about it in the kind of terms that people get, rather than giving them a dissertation of economic policy,” he said. Governor’s elections in 2026 give Democrats a chance to test their understanding and messaging on the issue, said Democratic pollster Margie Omero, whose firm has advised Wisconsin’s Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in the past and winning Arizona Senate candidate Ruben Gallego this year. “So there’s an opportunity to really make sure people, who governors have a connection to, are feeling some specificity and clarity with the Democratic economic message,” Omero said.

Supply chain software firm Logility explores sale, sources saySteep price hikes could be on the way if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his pledge to impose sweeping new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China. He threatened to implement the tariffs on the country’s top three trading partners on his first day back in office, including a 10% tariff on products from China. In a pair of social media posts, he explained the decision as a way to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs. “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States,” he said. “It is time for them to pay a very big price!” Ultimately, consumers could end up absorbing the brunt of those costs. When tariffs are levied on imports, American companies have to pay taxes to the U.S. government on their purchases from other countries; the companies often pass on those extra costs to customers. “This is a bully effort to put everybody on notice,” said economist Chris Thornberg, founding partner of Beacon Economics in Los Angeles. “One of the reasons he uses tariffs is because it’s one of the few places that he actually has some leverage.” Though Thornberg noted it’s still a “giant remains-to-be seen” whether and how Trump’s proposed tariffs are implemented, consumer goods across the board could be dramatically affected. (AP) — Two New Hampshire fathers who were barred from school district events for wearing pink wristbands marked “XX” to represent female chromosomes insisted at a federal court hearing Thursday that they didn't set out to harass or otherwise target a transgender soccer player who played on the team. But a judge hearing the case suggested the message the parents sent may matter more than their intentions. Kyle Fellers and Anthony Foote sued the Bow school district after being banned from school grounds for wearing the wristbands at their daughters' soccer game in September. The no-trespass orders have since expired, but a judge is deciding whether the plaintiffs should be allowed to wear the wristbands and carry signs at upcoming school events, including basketball games, swim meets and a music concert, while the case proceeds. Testifying at Thursday's hearing, both men said that they did not view the wristbands as a protest against Parker Tirrell, a transgender girl on the opposing team, but rather as a show of support for their daughters and their teammates. U.S. District Court Judge Steven McAuliffe questioned whether there is a meaningful distinction and whether their intentions matter. “Sometimes the message you think you’re sending might not be the message that is being sent,” he said. McAuliffe asked Foote whether it occurred to him that a transgender person might interpret the pink XX wristbands as an attempt to invalidate their existence. “If he’s a trans female, pink might be a color he likes,” Foote said. McAuliffe also noted that while both plaintiffs said they had no problem with transgender people outside the issue of sports, they repeatedly referred to the athlete in question as a boy. “You seem to go out of your way to suggest there’s no such thing as a trans girl,” McAuliffe said. As the country aims to lessen its dependence on fossil fuels and transition towards cleaner energy sources, the battery manufacturing and recycling ecosystem is likely to emerge as a critical component of this transformation. Presently, two primary types of batteries dominate the market, namely, lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). While lead-acid batteries have been used in consumer electronics for decades, LIBs on the other hand, have gained significant popularity due to their higher energy density and longer lifespan. The ministry of mines had identified 30 critical minerals in 2023 as risk in supply chain. Among them, lithium (Li), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) are important under clean energy initiative for electric vehicle batteries. The government's further budget announcement to exempt 25 critical minerals from customs duty is likely to boost the production of these advanced battery types, particularly LIBs which rely heavily on such minerals. As of 2020, the estimated cumulative stock of LIBs in India was approximately 15 GWh, with consumer electronics charting the course at 61%, followed by stationary applications and transportation applications, respectively. India will be a major LIB consumer by 2030, the battery storage demand of 34GW in 2023 will be expected to reach 450GW by 2030. The majority of the rechargeable battery demand currently 90% are driven by automative applications. The consumer electronics sector, comprising tablets, laptops and smartphones, represents the largest share of LIB demand in India and this market is projected to double in the next two to three years, reaching an estimated value of ₹ 2 trillion. Demand for electric vehicles (EVs), LIB for electronic gadgets, linked and IoT-based devices, and automation and battery-operated material-handling equipment are the driver for the growth. Major demand LIB (80%) in EVs is seen due to the government’s push to replace 30% existing vehicles with EVs by 2030. This supremacy is expected to continue in the coming years and given the growing reliance of consumer electronics on LIBs, these batteries are crucial in achieving these projected growth figures. The exponential demand of LIBs system, expected to receive considerable investment in cumulative cell manufacturing capacity of 30GWh, as cell manufacturing cost in India is lowest $ 92.8/ kWh, China $98.2/kWh, Korea $ 98.1/kWh. Having said that, the current manufacturing focus in India is on assembling battery management systems (BMS) and battery packs with most sub-components produced domestically, except for key elements like some BMS components and thermal pads, which are imported, mostly from China. Currently, Li-ion cells or battery packs are predominantly imported from China, South Korea or Taiwan in India. However, challenges including a lack of key raw materials and limited research and development prevent in scaling up domestic battery cell manufacturing. The 70 % of the world’s lithium extracted from brine in Bolivia, Argentina, Australia, the United States, Chile and China and extraction is water and energy intensive process. Recently, reserves are found in Salal-Haimana area of the Reasi district in Jammu and Kashmir. The Democratic Republic of Congo houses nearly 47 % of cobalt reserves, nearly 23 % in Australia, nearly 10 % in Indonesia and nearly 20% in rest of the world. Changing the battery chemistry, the manufacturers make a balance the cobalt supply with demand. Cobalt prices have declined by over 31% recently. Nickel-based lithium-ion batteries show a higher energy density than cobalt based one. Nickel reserves is 100 Mn MT, where Indonesia and Australia possess largest shares (21Mn MT). Due to the limited reserves of critical materials, the Circular Economy (CE) is preferred business model to create as alternative source. Urban mining gives the high returns with effective extraction efficiency, e.g. one tonne of battery grade lithium can be extracted from 750 tonnes of brine or 250 tonnes of ores, whereas, 1T battery graded lithium can easily be extracted from 28 tonnes of discarded LIB. Similarly, one tonne of battery grade cobalt can be recovered from 300 tonnes of ores, whereas, similar quantity of lithium may require five-15 tonnes of discarded lithium ion batteries. Though the scenario will be true only if battery grade recycling happens. Looking ahead, the total cumulative potential for battery storage in India is estimated to reach an impressive 600 GWh by 2030. Moreover, the estimated energy savings from recycling materials in consumer electronics is projected to be 14.7 GWh between 2022 to 2030. As a result, efficient recycling technologies dedicated to consumer electronics batteries becomes increasingly paramount. While the EV segment is estimated to contribute a large segment, the consumer electronics sector will also play a necessary role in the recycling ecosystem due to the shorter lifespan and higher turnover rate of these devices as compared to a car. Recognising this importance of battery recycling, the government had implemented various regulations to promote responsible disposal and recycling including the Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001 and the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. These regulations outline the responsibilities of producers, dealers, consumers or entities involved in ensuring proper collection, transportation, and recycling of used batteries, including those from consumer electronics. Additionally, the recent budget announcement on the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) further emphasises this commitment. As announced by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, this mission will focus on domestic production, recycling of critical minerals, and overseas acquisition of critical mineral assets. Complementing this mission, a proposed Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for critical mineral recycling is under consideration by the ministry of mines. This scheme seeks to foster a circular economy by incentivising the recovery and reuse of critical minerals, thereby reducing reliance on imports and supporting the growth of domestic supply chain. However, despite these initiatives, challenges remain, including ambitious recycling targets, inadequate infrastructure, and a burdensome compliance process. Issues like daily upload of sales and procurement data and marking of EPR registration numbers are likely to disrupt global chains and make compliance burdensome. Furthermore, the regulations' emphasis on using domestically recycled content adds to the complexity, as India's manufacturing and recycling systems are still in the early phases of development. The effective addressal of these challenges requires the implementation of specialised recycling facilities and research in recycling technologies. This should be complemented with consumer awareness campaigns on proper battery disposal. Additionally, incentivising manufacturers to design devices with easily removable batteries is another essential component. To further bolster the battery ecosystem, strategic public-private partnerships (PPPs) can be instrumental. By fostering collaboration between government bodies, industry leaders, and research institutions, India can accelerate innovation and establish robust supply chains. Investments in local manufacturing capabilities and R&D can reduce dependency on imports, thus enhancing self-reliance. On the international front, India can explore opportunities to engage with global initiatives and frameworks focused on sustainable energy and battery technology. Participation in international collaborations can provide access to advanced technologies, best practices, and funding opportunities. Furthermore, India must prioritise the development of a skilled workforce capable of driving the battery revolution. Educational and vocational training programs focused on battery technology, recycling processes, and sustainable practices can equip the workforce with the necessary skills to support the industry’s growth. India's journey towards a sustainable Bharat requires collaboration from stakeholders across sectors including the government, industry, and academia to overcome technological hurdles, establish efficient recycling infrastructure, and create a circular economy.
