Victor Wembanyama went to a park in New York City and played 1-on-1 with fans on Saturday. He even lost a couple of games. Not in basketball, though. Wemby was playing chess. And this wasn't on a whim: He knows how to play and even brought his own chess set. Before the San Antonio Spurs left New York for a flight to Minnesota, Wembanyama put out the call on social media: “Who wants to meet me at the SW corner of Washington Square park to play chess? Im there,” Wembanyama wrote. It was 9:36 a.m. People began showing up almost immediately. Washington Square Park is a known spot for chess in New York — Bobby Fischer among others have famously played there, and it's been used for multiple movie scenes featuring the game. Wembanyama was there for an hour in the rain, from about 10-11 a.m. He played four games, winning two and losing two — he told Bleacher Report afterward that both of the losses were to professional chess players — before departing to catch the Spurs' flight. Wembanyama had been trying to get somewhere to play chess for the bulk of the team's time in New York — the Spurs played the Knicks on Christmas and won at Brooklyn on Friday night. The schedule never aligned, until Saturday morning. And even with bad weather, he bundled up to make it happen. He posed for photos with a couple of dozen people who showed up, braving a morning of cold rain to play chess with one of the NBA's biggest stars. “We need an NBA players only Chess tournament, proceeds go to the charity of choice of the winner,” he wrote on social media after his chess trip was over. Wembanyama is averaging 25.2 points and 10.1 rebounds this season, his second in the NBA after winning rookie of the year last season. The Spurs play at Minnesota on Sunday. F1 Don't miss out on the headlines from F1. Followed categories will be added to My News. The guillotine has fallen on Sergio Perez. Red Bull is reportedly set to officially cut Sergio Perez following a meeting of the team’s shareholders next week — giving the Mexican driver one final ride at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. The year has been a nightmare for Perez, who will finish eighth in the world championship despite teammate Max Verstappen fending off Lando Norris to defend his crown. Perez has been made a laughing stock in recent months. Not since Michael Schumacher blew his teammate Jos Verstappen away in 1994 has a driver finished so far below a championship-winning teammate. He signed a contract extension — through to the end of the 2026 season — earlier this year after Daniel Ricciardo ruined what was rumoured to be a plot from Red Bull boss Christian Horner to get the Australian into Perez’s seat. Every F1 qualifying session and race LIVE in 4K on Kayo. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. According to ESPN , Red Bull senior figures have made the decision that enough is enough after watching Perez cost the team the constructor’s championship. The report claims Perez will likely still have a role with the team because the contract extension he signed earlier this year came with some guarantees. The contract was cleared with the Contract Recognition Board, leading to speculation sacking Perez could cost the team $10m to buy out his deal. The decision to cut Perez will send shockwaves around the sport with the team now having the difficult decision of finding the best option to replace him. VCARB driver Yuki Tsunoda has had an impressive second half of the year for the Red Bull junior operation, but Kiwi Liam Lawson has put a strong case forward since he replaced Ricciardo. According to motorsport.com , no final decision has been made — but the two VCARB drivers are the only options the team is considering. It makes next week’s final testing event in Abu Dhabi a shootout between the pair. Max Verstappen has ruined Sergio Perez’s career. Photo by Mark Thompson/Getty Images. That will then leave a vacant seat at VCARB with Red Bull again reportedly likely to promote from within its junior nursery of rising stars. According to ESPN, Formula 2 driver Isack Hadjar will likely be the one promoted to join VCARB. Red Bull product Franco Colapinto, who drove in his rookie season for Williams in 2024, looked like a strong candidate to join the Red Bull junior team, but senior Red Bull officials have reportedly gone cold on that option. Horner was diplomatic when speaking after Perez failed to finish Monday morning’s Qatar Grand Prix. It was the sixth time this season that Pérez had not scored a point . Horner said Pérez was “old enough and wise enough to know what the situation is”. “I’m going to let Checo (Pérez) come to his own conclusions, nobody’s forcing him one way or another,” he said, per ESPN. “It’s not a nice situation for him to obviously be in.” He went on to say: “Look, Checo has had a very tough year. “Obviously the points table are what they are. We’re very much focused on really supporting him to the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi, and then obviously it’s not an enjoyable situation for Checo, being in this position with speculation every week. It has been a turbulent year for Red Bull and Visa Cash App RB. Photo by Mark Thompson / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA. “He’s old enough and wise enough to know what the situation is, and yeah, let’s see where we are after Abu Dhabi.” When asked what he would do if Pérez wanted to stay put at Red Bull after next week’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Horner said he would wait until the end of the weekend to see where the team was placed. It seems Perez’s failures at last month’s Las Vegas Grand Prix also lost him plenty of support — including from senior advisor Helmut Marko. “We have to have two drivers who finish in the points,” Marko told DAZN at the time. “Max is more than 200 points ahead of Sergio [in the driver standings]. For our employees, it is a disappointment because they will not receive their bonuses, as they depend on our position in the Constructors’ Championship.” Marko had essentially let the cat out of the bag on Monday, already speculating about Perez’s replacement. Marko told ViaPlay on Monday the team will make decisions next week. “There is a meeting Monday after Abu Dhabi,” he said. “All the major people are there, all of the shareholders, and there a decision will be done. “We always — or most of the time — brought our own drivers through the Red Bull program and I think it’s a philosophical decision: do we stick to that? And what I got from the shareholders is it will be in this direction.” More Coverage ‘Lost all respect’: Max gives rival both barrels Matthew Sullivan Star’s blunt admission after AFL scandal Originally published as Bombshell Red Bull report sends shockwaves across Formula 1 More related stories F1 Red Bull ready to swing the axe after nightmare year The guillotine has fallen at Red Bull with the world champion outfit set to transform what the grid looks like in 2025. It's been widely assumed for weeks that LA will end up with someone like Jonas Valančiūnas of the Washington Wizards or Robert Williams III of the Portland Trail Blazers. Two further, dreamier targets for the Lakers at center are Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz and Jakob Poeltl of the Toronto Raptors, but both will be difficult to come by. Now, according to Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer, a new name has surfaced on the market for centers, and it's not a small name at that. In fact, he's a former No. 1 overall pick. Fischer revealed on Friday that while many have assumed the Trail Blazers are shopping Williams III, they actually might prefer to sell Deandre Ayton, who is currently in year three of a four-year, $133 million contract. Apparently, Portland likes the value they are getting out of Williams III for what they are paying him, which presumably isn't how they feel about Ayton. The emergence of Donovan Clingan as a viable NBA rim protector in Portland also probably has something to do with the Trail Blazers losing interest in retaining Ayton. Whatever the reason may be, Ayton could become available on the trade market soon, which means teams that need a center (i.e. the Lakers) will be tempted to trade for the 26-year-old seven-footer. Ayton would undoubtedly be a nice pickup for the Lake Show. While he's never turned into the franchise center that the Phoenix Suns hoped he would be when they made him the first overall pick, Ayton has been far from a bust. He's averaged 16.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in his career thus far on 59.0 percent from the field. He's not a bad free throw shooter, either, especially for someone of his stature. He's a 76.0 percent shooter from the stripe over his career. Should the Lakers prepare an offer for Ayton? He and Anthony Davis could be a monstrous frontcourt in Los Angeles. By MARC LEVY HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democratic Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania conceded his reelection bid to Republican David McCormick on Thursday, as a statewide recount showed no signs of closing the gap and his campaign suffered blows in court in its effort to get favorable ballots counted. Casey’s concession comes more than two weeks after Election Day, as a grindingly slow ballot-counting process became a spectacle of hours-long election board meetings, social media outrage, lawsuits and accusations that some county officials were openly flouting the law. Republicans had been claiming that Democrats were trying to steal McCormick’s seat by counting “illegal votes.” Casey’s campaign had accused of Republicans of trying to block enough legitimate votes to prevent him from pulling ahead and winning. In a statement, Casey, a stalwart of Pennsylvania’s Democratic establishment and the state’s longest serving Democrat ever in the Senate, said he had just called McCormick to congratulate him. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last,” Casey said. Casey’s campaign said the last of the ballots cast before polls closed on Nov. 5’s Election Day had finally been counted Thursday. The Associated Press called the race for McCormick on Nov. 7, concluding that not enough ballots remained to be counted in areas Casey was winning for him to take the lead. As of Thursday, McCormick led by about 16,000 votes out of almost 7 million ballots counted. That was well within the 0.5% margin threshold to trigger an automatic statewide recount under Pennsylvania law. But no election official expected a recount to change more than a couple hundred votes or so, and Pennsylvania’s highest court dealt Casey a blow when it refused entreaties to allow counties to count mail-in ballots that lacked a correct handwritten date on the return envelope. Casey in the meantime had won efforts to get counties to tabulate thousands of provisional ballots that might otherwise have been thrown out because of an error by an election worker. That included voters whose registrations hadn’t been properly processed, the campaign said. But the campaign lost other efforts to get counties to count ballots that were disqualified over garden-variety errors that voters made, like not signing a provisional ballot in two places or not putting the ballot into an inner “secrecy” envelope. Republicans will have a 53-47 majority next year in the U.S. Senate. McCormick, 59, recaptured a GOP seat in Pennsylvania after Republicans lost one in 2022, paying off a bet that party brass made when they urged McCormick to run and consolidated support behind him. It was McCormick’s second time running, after he lost narrowly to Dr. Mehmet Oz in 2022’s GOP primary. McCormick, the former CEO of the world’s largest hedge fund , drew on tens of millions of dollars in campaign cash from allies from across the worlds of hedge funds and securities trading to help make the race the nation’s second-most expensive in the campaign cycle. ___ Follow Marc Levy at twitter.com/timelywriterFulham boss Marco Silva sends ex-Arsenal stars message in bid to get one over on Tottenham

Pressley: Biden 'must act' on clemency before leaving officePHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley wanted to be a student in team history before he had a chance to make some with the Eagles. The running back who had just signed with Philadelphia for $26 million guaranteed took a deep dive on some of the franchise’s greats out of the backfield. He learned about Wilbert Montgomery. Brushed up on LeSean McCoy. Barkley then put them in his sights — and this week against Carolina, he could become the top single-season rusher in Eagles history. Get past those two Eagles Hall of Famers and the target narrows: McCoy has a chance to break Eric Dickerson's NFL single-season rushing mark of 2,105 yards, set in 1984. “That's your goal,” Barkley said. “You want to come in here, you want to leave a legacy on a place, on a franchise.” Here's where things stand with Barkley in his pursuit of records: — Barkley has an NFL-best 1,499 yards rushing through 12 games, an average of 124.9 yards per game. At that pace and with one more game to play than Dickerson, he would surpass the NFL mark that's stood for 40 years. — Barkley needs to run for 108 yards against the Panthers to break McCoy's Eagles record of 1,607 yards set in 2013. Montgomery ran for 1,512 yards in 1978. “I'm aware of the things I can accomplish,” Barkley said. “The way I accomplish that is sticking to the script.” The Eagles (10-2) have won eight straight to take control of the NFC East and remain in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the conference. Barkley — with a little help from Jalen Hurts — has largely led the way and moved into MVP consideration. The former New York Giant also ranks third in the league with 11 rushing touchdowns. It's reasonable to expect Barkley to pile on the yards against Carolina (3-9). The Panthers are 32nd in the league against the run and just allowed Tampa Bay's Bucky Irving to run for a career-high 152 yards last week (he had never broken 100). “It’s incredible what he is doing. The record has stood up for a while. I mean 17 games or 14 games, it’s ridiculous,” Panthers defensive lineman Shy Tuttle said. “It’s a record that has been held for a long time and whoever breaks it, Saquon or someone else, it’s an incredible achievement.” Barkley leads the NFL with four rushing touchdowns of 25-plus yards this season and tied Montgomery for the most 100-yards games in an Eagles season with eight. “You get to see the player on Sundays. We get to see the person every other day during the week,” offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said. “He’s special. At the end of the day, he’s a special teammate, special person. The way he connects with everyone, rallies everyone together. He’s one of the best.” Putting last week behind him Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard is eager to get back on the field and put last week behind him. Carolina’s leading rusher had a costly fumble in overtime last Sunday against Tampa Bay as the Panthers were driving for a potential game-winning field goal, resulting in a 26-23 loss to division rival Tampa Bay. A dejected Hubbard remained on the bench for several minutes after the loss. “You definitely use it as motivation,” Hubbard said. “I have come a long way and I know what it’s like to play great football. That was a big mistake on my end, but I don’t just lose all of the work I have put in because of that one mistake.” Get down, Young man Bryce Young is beginning to show he can be a factor with his legs, scoring on a 10-yard run last week against the Buccaneers. However, Young still receives plenty of good-natured ribbing from his teammates when it comes to his sliding ability, which the QB has previously admitted is limited because he wasn’t much of a baseball player. “He definitely has to work on his slide,” Hubbard said. “He has been making people miss so he hasn’t had to slide like that a lot. I mean I’m not trying to hate on my dog’s slide but it’s just a work in progress. He will be all right.” Oh, those Philly fans Panthers guard Robert Hunt said it’s always interesting playing in Philadelphia because of the team’s passionate fan base. Last year, while Hunt was playing for the Dolphins, he said an Eagles fan attempted to board the Miami team bus. “They have some characters there — some people who don’t really give a damn,” Hunt said. “He was trying to trash-talk us. But he was confident and that is what makes them them.” Hunt said the fan never made it on the bus. “Aw hell no, we would have stomped that boy,” Hunt said with a laugh. “He tried. He was talking his noise. Good for him. I don’t want to say you want a fan base like that, but you want a fan base that cares about the team.” AP Sports Writer Steve Reed in Charlotte, North Carolina, contributed to this report.
